Jaddie:

You might try CMT, they advertise on the MR web site. I buy all of my Rapido products from them. It is Canadian Model Trains.

I guess what I'm concerned about is dropping alot of $$ before the stuff is produced. I'm a guy who like to see what he is buying, feel it, and try it out.  I also understand that Jason is running a business and will only produce what is committed for.

Daryl

Which is exactly why Rapido did and is doing this mass-tour across Canada and is dropping into Sacramento for a show. As I'm  sure you are learning or have discovered, they';re just too small a company to make then sell, but they are trying to do something for the Canadian Modeller anyway. The budget just isn't there to make the deposit on a large order, hence why they are forced to ask the cusptmers for it. Even in a better economy wherehe could still do his regular coaches on orders and not by the pre-orders, there wiuld likely still be this deposit system in place. I'm going to assume part or most of this trip is going to come out of Jason's pocket, not Rapido's since it's likeily racking up on his VIA travel points. And even if it's not, for all the train-lag he's going through, I applaud the man for doing as much as he is for this tour.

Signed,
A guy not modelling the Canadian but is lookign forward to the day the shells begin getting resold for other roads.

Dear Jason

Thanks for posting. I really appreciate it when the manufacturers themselves post on user forums.

I like your Canadian pieces. They look detailed and your reputation is great. One poster on another thread referred to your passenger coaches as "the gold standard."

If you ever sell direct, you might consider a layaway-style plan for your future products. For instance, if I were going to spend US$375 as a deposit on a train set, I'd definitely have to gain approval from my wife first, and I don't think she'd approve of such a large purchase. However, if I were asking her to agree to a $150 monthly charge to our credit card, I'd have a much higher likelihood of approval.

For anyone around Vancouver, there is a viewing at Pacific Western Rail tomorrow. Just down the road from me in South Surrey near the U.S. boarder. I 'll hopefully make it in for a look see. It is from 1600 til 1800.

I had a chance to see the much anticipated 'Canadian' rolling stock as a representative from Rapido Trains visited my LHS yesterday.  I must say I was really impressed with how much detail are contained in these cars.

That was me.  I am now in my roomette on The Canadian pulling out of Jasper.  Rapido only has three full-time employees: Bill, Dan and me.  So if you meet someone from Rapido at a hobby shop there is a 100% chance it will be one of us!

The reason I took the samples on tour (and have barely seen my kids in the last month) was to give prospective customers like you a chance to see and hear and feel the train in person.  There's not much else I can do apart from that.  As it is such a large project, we can't afford to make a bunch extra in case people will decide to buy them later.

Now if I only had a sugar daddy.... Cool

Best regards,

Jason

Dear Friends

How would one reserve such a set? I looked at several of their dealers' websites and found no information related to the set.

How does reserving a set usually work? Surely the reserver wouldn't have to tender the full purchase price until the item ships.

Thank you.

--Jaddie

From what I understand, you just order it through your local hobby shop. They take your deposit and submit it to Rapido Trains. Try going to Rapido's web site and I am sure that they should have some info for you.

Just be sure to get a receipt for your deposit that indicates what it is for including the full purchase price.

I was out at Canadian Model Trains in Mississauga a couple of Sunday's ago when Jason brought the models to the Toronto area. He had the set running on a small layout at the store and it looked and sounded great. This was running smoothly on DCC but the units had not been fine tuned  ( CV wise ) as he had recently returned with the units from the manufacturer in  China.

The diesel units have individually controlled headlights with single or dual bulbs as is appropriate for that particular engine and separately controlled number boards and indicator lights controllable for White, Green or Off. Also the car interiors are all lit with micro LED's powered from the track. The interior of the cars are also as finely detailed as the outside including the headrest covers and the engraved glass dividers. Even the glass windows are tinted to the correct shade of green. Even the name boards on the sides of the cars are different sizes to coincide with the different car names. (Short for the shorter cars names and longer for the longer car names. just like the real ones.)

As has been earlier indicated, the deposit IS $25 %.

In my opinion, $1500.00 for this complete set at this level of detail is a steal. I only wish that I modeled in HO instead of N Scale. As it is, She Who Must Be Obeyed has stated that under no circumstances will she authorize that kind of expenditure for a dust gathering Shelf Queen.

Oh well. If I were 30 or 40 years younger I might take a chance with her wrath but as we are coming up on 49 years married in August, I'm just to old to break in a new wife.Bang HeadLaugh

Ridden many pleasure filled days on the old "Canuck" and the photos,  if they are to be believed are fantastic---brought back a lot of great memories.  If someone was interested in getting into MR and being able to get a whole train for that price I would sell my stamp album to achieve it.

Hopefully this company will bring back a lot of the old American dream trains in the future.

From what I am seeing, they just added a new consist:

210007 The Canadian - CP Action Red with 8" Locomotive Stripes
MSRP $1499.95

FP9A: 1407 (8" Stripes)
F9B: 4474 (8" Stripes)
FP9A: 1409 (8" Stripes)
BAGGAGE-DORM: 601
COACH: 100
COACH: 122
SKYLINE: 508
DINER: ANNAPOLIS
SLEEPER: CHATEAU RICHELIEU
SLEEPER: CHATEAU VARENNES
SLEEPER: MONCK MANOR
SLEEPER: ELGIN MANOR
PARK: TREMBLANT PARK

Should be on their website soon.  This was in response to the demand for this particular paint scheme.

And the "B" unit will be included in the package as well.  Just easier that way.

If the level of detail is comparable to brass (or even better) and the set is a limited run made for a small market, I'd say $1500 is bargain.     And to top it all off, Rapido is offering the set in all the CP paint schemes and VIA Rail too.

Thanks for the input everyone.  Let me be clear. I think the price tag is reasonable for what you are getting. I saw these cars in person and was very impressed with them. As I do more research, I realize the amazing level of detail is contained in these cars.

I guess what I'm concerned about is dropping alot of $$ before the stuff is produced. I'm a guy who like to see what he is buying, feel it, and try it out.  I also understand that Jason is running a business and will only produce what is committed for.

It just saddens me that I (and many others) may not be able to afford this fine train set because it might be sold out.   I guess that is the risk with buying a collector's item.

Lastly, I found out what "kvetch" means.  Sticks and stones...

It is a pretty decent deal for what the set offers.

The cars and motive power will be sold individually later on, but the cost will probably be more than the set, as the cars will sell for at least $100 each.  Or just buy a $40 car and spend $100 and a lot of time superdetailing it.

Jason has set the bar at a new level with this one.  Even the "glass" is correct.  Since they are sold as a set, the colour should be consistent as well. When they are made individually there may be slight differences over time.

Has anyone heard about the deposit that is required for this set?

The deposits are 25% and are due 26 August.

I ordered a set in the original colours, am debating if I should also get a set in Via as well.

Have you seen the pictures of the first production engines?

Fantastic detail.

Geeesh.

What a set that would look like!!

At $1500 for the whole thing? 3 F units, PLUS 10 cars?!?!?...let us break this down a bit...if the F units went for $150 each and the cars went for $105 each....you'd still be hard pressed to find ANYTHING of that size anywhere....

I guess t'is the season of the kvetch....

Rapido's Canadian

Hi all,

I had a chance to see the much anticipated 'Canadian' rolling stock as a representative from Rapido Trains visited my LHS yesterday.  I must say I was really impressed with how much detail are contained in these cars.

At the price tag of nearly $1500 for the set (10 cars and 3 loco's) it is sadly out of my price range. It is too bad also as only 2000 sets will be produced, so prices might be higher as supply runs out and items are sold on ebay or other sites.

I may have to settle for VIA cars from Walther's.  Do any other people have thoughts on the subject and the high price for these models.

Regards,

D
