This has always been my favorite NS unit, anyone here know how I can model it?

That's going to be a tough one.

The basics are easy. Get a Conrail SD40-2 in the Qualitry scheme. The patch job is relatively easy was well, mask the square, paint white, decal on the new numbers.

However, the hood doors are going to be tough. You might be able to pull off making a custom decal for it, using Photoshop and a pic of an SD40-2 in the NS scheme, crop & print to a decal sheet with a colour inkjet. The other way would be to mask & paint the two doors, then add a trimmed decal from a NS decal sheet.

That is bazzare. I agree that making a homemade decal would probably be the best way, from what I can figure out.

It is easier than having a custom decal made. Buy or paint a unit to match a standard Conrail unit. Weather it to match the photo and note the nose appears to have been repainted recently. When that is done, mask the matching doors on the side and paint them black. Paint a panel under the cab window in white. Use the herald decals from an NS set and cut them to fit the black doors and number the white panel on the cab. Lightly weather and you will have the unit you want.

I just had a thought though, If your going to print it at home, you'd have to have a alps printer to print the white, that or paint the backround white and have the white part clear decal film when printed.

I'd do it just as arbfbe suggests. It's far easier to do it as a patch job with 1 repainted door rather than the expense of custom decals or even printing them yourself. The NS door , on a standard inkjet printer would have to be printed black , and applied to a white painted door. Chopping up a 5 dollar decal set is much easier!
Cool unit, but is there an NS unit out there with a blue door???[:D]

Just a thought on the door decal, decal paper is also offered in white, so all it would take is to print the black on the paper, seal it, cut it out, and apply it to the model. I think that the white decal paper is about $2 a sheet, so it would be cheaper than a whole set of decals. I have to admit I like the idea of this model. There might be one show up at my place sometime!

Good Luck, Morpar

I would paint the door black and use a set of NS decals cut out for the portion you need. You could print up a decal, but it may be more trouble. Also remember that CR SD40-2 roude on Flexcoil trucks vice HTC, so you'll need to swap sideframes.
