They stopped it. Chase loco was running backward well over the 25mph limit for the unloaded loco and the engineer was in the "rear"of the loco with no view on right curves. The conductor standing at the :front" of the loco had to use hand signals for estimated speed in curves. If they would have left the rails, they would not have survived. It was definitely an adrenalin rush. The engineer broke off the lever for the horn during the chase.

A couple videos about this incident made before the final report was published on how the enginner did not get back on the slowly moving locomotive when still in the yard.

Might have been posted before. Never did find any interview of the chase locomitve crew but may have missed it.
