caboose service facilities
Posted by hon30critter on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 9:41 PM

Hi everyone!

I am looking for ideas for modeling caboose service facilities. My forum search has turned up a few references to the several types of structures that could be used, but no pictures.

How have you modeled your caboose service area? Pictures would be great.

Thanks

Dave

Here's a shot of my cabin car service, Dave. A bashed caboose and converted chicken house. DJ.

Thanks DJ.

I assume that the chicken coop was used for coal storage judging by the coal in front of it.

I gather the average caboose service facility was done as cheaply as possible. I have some Walthers Modulars brick walls etc that I was considering using, but on second thought that may be too rich to be realistic for a small facility.

August, 1978 MR had an article, with drawings, for caboose servicing facilities.  The structures were rather small.

The article in the August 1978 issue includes a photo of a C&NW caboose on blocks, half of the caboose was used as a supply shed, and half as a coal shed.  There are drawings of a Milwaukee Road coal box, storage shed, and fuel oil tank; a Santa Fe ice house (I suppose ice would be important in warm climates) and coal box; and a Wabash flag and lantern stand that had a stairway and platform to access the caboose's roof.  The drawings are in S scale.
