Anyone Know anything about EMD GP-5?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 4:49 PM
Hello everyone,

I was doing a little digging today. I came across a model designation noted as a GP-5. Upon looking at the picture It is a locomotive resembling a GP7/9. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is a locomotive model that predates the GP-7. a variation of a GP-7 built for GN, or is just a GP-7 that for some reason GN decided to call a GP-5. Also sources I can go to conduct further reaserch would be helpfu.

Sincerely,

James R. Mitich

The GP-5 was an FT engine, 1350HP, rebuilt in a GP-9 carbody. Only the GN had those. I've seen them refered to as GP-9m's as well. There was a pair of wrecked GP-7's rebuilt for the Midland Valley in GP-9 carbodies that retained their 1500HP engines, I believe the MV designated them GP-9m's.

The GP5 is a Great Northern Class designation, not a model designation.
