Cabbose industries ground throws mounting
Posted by Blind Bruce on Saturday, January 29, 2011 11:27 AM

I have inserted a 3/4 X 1" piece of wood into my foam layout top to receive screws for the Caboose industries ground throws. I have no wood screws that small. What should I fasten them with?

i quit using screws or nails for these ground throws many years ago.   when mounting them on a wooden surface, i center the little critter and hold it down with the tip of a screwdriver while applying a SMALL amount of super glue to the edge of the base.    soon as it takes hold, you are done.  just don't overdo it with the glue or you will bind the mechanism.    you can go back later and add screws after you drill the holes out if you wish but i don't find any mechanical fasteners needed after gluing them down.   i have been using this method for over 5 years with no failures yet.

I also glue wood blocks to my foamboard. Then I use match sticks to equilize the point opening. I use #2 - 1/2 inch wood screws. You will have to enlarge the holes in the ground throw for these screws. Raising the throw arm straight up I drill a #50 pilot hole in the wood block and drive in the screws. The screws should be available at hardware stores, lumber yards, Home Depot or Lowes. I used to use a dab of five minute epoxy or CA but it is just as easy to do the screws the first time.

All my CI throws are mounted directly to the foam or cork  with a small dab of cheap latex caulk. More than 25 and no problems. Turn them over, a dab of caulk and mount. You can adjust the position before the caulk sets and it's removable if needed.

I use caulk, then like the track they are quite removable. I have never had one come loose. I also mount my little cement pads down with it, as it works as a great leveler. Cowboy

I do use screws I bought online and use small blocks of ply the same height as the cork I use.

I mount mine on cork and use sewing pins with a dab of CA on the end - Still removable if I need them to be.  I have also used the "dab of caulk" method, but only on the shim supplied.  I still pin/CA them down to the shim.

I've been using low-temp hot glue, (a little dab 'll do ya), both on cork pads or directly to the foam. Not one has popped loose in 10 years.
