So I'm not well versed on the ordering of locomotives and rolling stock (I have six cars and two locos, all bought off the shelf at the LHS.)  Is pre-ordering a must on a product like this?

The last time they came out I pre-ordered #44 and by the time I picked it up and paid for it it was listed as "Find It" on Walthers's site. A good Hobby shop would advance it for you and charge you when you pick it up or when they ship it to you without raising the price.

Mine doesn't move.......it's at the station!!!

These days, if you want to be 100% sure you'll get the loco you want, pre-ordering is a must. Yes, there is still a good possibility that you can find a loco like this at your LHS or online after the release, but it is still a minor gamble, given the way some things sell out now.

If you know 100% sure that you really want it, pre-order.

Walthers had some about 8 months ago.  They are not easy to search to find however on the website.  I think due to Athearn being the mfg and the Walther's/Horizon competition.

  • I would like for WALTHERS to give ATHEARN licensing rights to offer HO AMTRAK P42 SHELLS already decorated for PHASE V. I ordered an ATHEARN HO P42 chassis awhile back but not the shell, since I would like for it to be an AMTRAK PHASE V P42 with roadnumber 177. David Briel

Thanks for all the responses.  It is good to know I wasn't missing something and the manufacturers are just not on top of things.

Actually I found one in stock at Nicholas Smith with Sound.  Shows 1 in stock.

Cant hurt to call them to see if they actually have it but they do have a large stock.

This might be a phase IV.  You might have to get the phase IV and paint it or have it painted in V

It's time for Walthers to do another run of these, I've only been able to get ahold of one so far in the last 5 years. Maybe this time do 4-6 numbers instead of 1 or 2. Or let Athearn do them if you're going to squat on the rights and underproduce.Stick out tongue

I emailed Walthers to see if they are planning another run. Unfortunately no reply form them. Now it would be nice if Kato were to produce this in HO.

I have two of the Phase V units that were offered over two years ago.  I wish Athearn would offer this model in the Genesis line or another manufacturer would produce it.  From my understanding Walthers holds the licensing to produce models such as the passenger cars for the Phase V and contracts Athearn to produce the loco.  It is the only time (currently) that an Athearn loco is offered through Walthers.

Athearn made a limited number of P42s in the phase V scheme.  Good luck finding one at an affordable price since most I've seen are looking to gouge your eyes out.

HO scale P42
Posted by indiana rr on Sunday, January 2, 2011 1:18 AM

I have spent many a day scouring the internet for an HO scale P42 with Amtrak's Phase V paint scheme.  I can't seem to find one anywhere.  I find plenty with the three stripes starting at the nose, but none with the waves across the top.  Am I missing this, or does no one make one?  I find it hard to believe no one would make one considering all Amtrak locomotives wear it.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
