MR Product Reviews-????
Posted by philnrunt on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 3:48 AM
OK folks, fractions were never my strong suit, so what am I missing reading the MR Product reviews? On page 109, (Aug 04) the drawbar pull of the LL N scale C-424 is given at .8 (I read as 8th)of an oz, and the average N diesel is also given, listed at .1 (10th)of an oz.
On page 110, same issue, the Atlas N scale C-628 is reviewed, drawbar pull is rated at 1.0(1 oz), and average N diesel is given as .9 (9th of an oz )! Why is this a different figure?
At first I thought I was just reading it wrong, lord knows that has happened before, but after checking the number of cars this translates into-19 and 24 respectively, I don't think I read it wrong.
You math wiz's help me to see the error of my ways.In plain language, please.

Hi.... basic problem you have is translating decimal points into fractions.

0.1 of an ounce is definitely one tenth. But 0.8 is eight TENTHS of an ounce. It is not one eighth (1/8). Likewise, yep, 1.0 is one ounce but 0.9 is nine TENTHS of an ounce not a ninth (1/9).

A quickie here... to convert a fraction into a decimal (use a calculator) ...... just divide the number at the bottom of the fraction into the number at the top. So.... 1/8 = one divided by eight which is 0.125.

And a ninth is 1/9 = one divided by nine which is 0.111111

I hope this helps! And please don't ask about simultaneous equations!!!!!!
Good luck.
