Can you get to the page where you cna check which default avatar you want to use, or doesn't that even show? The sub pages load as popups - make sure you have this site set to allow popups. If you have a third party popup block in addition to what IE does itself, disable it or make sure to add this site to the whitelist so it allows popups. The default avatars are just here, you only need to check the one you want to use, there is no uploading involved for those.

Oh, now that is weird.  I wonder if Sir Madog can at least upload one of the default avatars?

Meanwhile, Vernon/IN, I wonder if you need to somehow clear or refresh the cache on your side to get rid of the faulty avatar.  I am not saying this would work, but at least try this.  At the top of Internet Explorer, click on Tools, the Delete Browsing History, then Close and OK to complete the cache clearing process.  Then see if you can upload your original avatar.

Rich

Rich,

I cleared the cache for FireFox (the Browser I use) and IE.  i still cannot get an uploaded avatar to display.  From watching the status bar at the bottom of the browser, the file is uploading but not displaying.

Now i cannot get one of the default avatars to display.  i can choose one, but it does not display.

I have logged out of the forum and then logged back in.  No change.

I scanned the file and found nothing.

I'm beginning to think that there is some type of flag in the forum software that is not getting either set or reset during the avatar upload process.

For the time being, I'll resign myself to being faceless along with Ulrich.

Cheers.

Just link it to an external site. Mine's actually coming from my personal web page. As do most of the pictures I postI put them on my web site anyway, so I figure why bother ALSO uploading them to photobucket or something.

Randy,

I just tried linking to a copy I uploaded to my PhotoBucket account.  I could not find a way to link to that copy.

I will try changing my avatar from another computer tomorrow.

I also tried various ways - with no luck. I wish I had not tried to change my avatar ... Sad. I leave it to the MR IT experts to sort that one out. Until then, I´ll remain a faceless blob.

Back in May, I struggled to change my avatar from the faceless blob to something more interesting, just like what poor Sir Madog is trying to accomplish now.

When I finally succeeded, I posted the specific instructions for what I did to accomplish this in the following thread.

http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/p/174285/1912308.aspx#1912308

I don't know if this will work now, or probably it has already been tried.  Whatever.

My gut tells me that there is nothing wrong with the forum software.  I suspect that the problem is in the user computer settings or, less likely, a corrupt avatar file that Sir Madog sent to  Vernon/IN.

Good luck guys, I feel for you.  I would change my avatar as a test case, but after reading through this post, I am afraid to do that.

Crandell, you try it.    Laugh

Have you tried Randy's suggestion of loading an avatar from a third party site like Photobucket?

I'm having the same trouble as Sir Madog and Vernon/IN are having with trying to load an avatar. Mine started when I noticed I couldn't see any avatars in the posts. I tried to delete my avatar and reload it to see if it would clear things up and now I have nothing other than the "faceless blob".

Rich, I went to your previous post that you attached above and noticed that on the right side of my screen I don't have a tab that says "My profile" instead I have one that reads "Public Profile (edit)". Also in your previous post you mention a series of settings regarding enabeling the avatar among other things. I seem to remember this screen when I first created my avatar but I have not been able to locate it since.

On a side note, I noticed that when Sir Madog originally posted this thread it was titled "Can't Upload My Avatar". Now for some reason the title is displayed as "Re: RE:Can´t Upload My Avatar". Does anybody else get this change in title when they view the post?

I'm beginning to think these issues might all be related and be an issue with the forums and not the individual computers.

Yep, I get the same jibberish in the title to the thread.

When I posted that thread in May, it predated the recent update in the forum appearance and the forum software.  Thy probably changed the procedure for adding an avatar at the same time.

%#180; it the HTML escape code for the 'backwards' apostrophe (usually to the left of the 1 key on a standard US keyboard). So for whatever reason this character was typed in instead of the normal apostrophe to make the word can't.

Probably a character set setting on the database, but since HTML tries to be universal and that symbol is not on all language character sets, it is usually rendered as the escape code. Not exactly the same thing, but since spaces are delimiters, a space is often shown in a URL as %20.

Rich,

Yes.  I uploaded a copy of my avatar to my PhotoBucket account but could not find a way to use a link rather than upload a file from my PC.

The only options I found were to use one of the default avatars or to upload a file from my PC.

Try doing it from someone else's computer.

Well, I tried changing my avatar from two different PCs at work today and had the same results.  Just to be sure the problem has nothing to do with the file, I went to another forum where I use the same avatar and downloaded the file to the computers at work.

This problem is not connected to either my PC or the file on my PC.  I've tried changing the avatar using both FireFox and IE with the same result.  At work, I do not have FireFox available and was only able to try it using IE.

The problem appears to be with the forum, either some obscure profile setting or the forum software.

At this point, since the avatar is not really needed, I'm not going to worry about it.  After a while, I may decide to try again just to see if anything changes.

Cheers

I uploaded a pic (see new avatar) directly from my computer a few days ago with no problem whatsoever.  It was a full ~100K pic and the forum software trimmed it to size.  No hosting needed.  Couldn't have been easier.

Glitch my eye, somehow its either the way you are doing it or it's something that's possibly been changed in your computer.

Just five minutes ago I did what I've always done ( exactly like tstage post above ) to have an Avatar and "viola" it changed from this   to this:

  and used to be this:

These three in post are from my account at "Photobucket" but the H-4 2-6-6-2 as Avatar is direct from trains.com taken from my computers "My Pictures".

What is so hard about doing this????

Also I'm running IE8

Wadda ya mean I'm old ? Just because I remember gasoline at 9 cents a gallon and those big coal burning steamers.

I just changed mine then changed it back, but it wasn't easy. The forum kept kicking the original back and wouldn't let it load. It finally loaded on the 5th attempt.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/H-42-6-6-2DCCandsound-1.gif and used to be this:http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/Trainnumbertwo.gif

These three in post are from my account at "Photobucket" but the H-4 2-6-6-2 as Avatar is direct from trains.com taken from my computers "My Pictures".

What is so hard about doing this????

Also I'm running IE8

When I first tried this, I changed avatars several times.  I then tried using the avatar Ulrich sent to me.  I was able to switch to his avatar.  After Ulrich saw that I was using his avatar, I tried to change back to the avatar I had been using and could not get it to display.  I changed to one of the default avatars provided by with the forum software,  Once that worked, I tried to go back to my avatar and still could not get it to display.

Now, I cannot even get one of the default avatars to display.

I have tried with both FireFox (the one I use) and IE 8 from my PC and I have tried changing avatars from the PCs at work (using IE only, no other browsers installed there).  The attempts from work were using a copy of my avatar that I downloaded from another forum,

I don't see how anyone could do something wrong.  You click on the "Change Avatar" link and a dialog comes up.  You have two tabbed choices; "Upload an Avatar" and "Select an Avatar".  If you choose to upload an avatar, you click the browse button and find and select your avatar then click the :Use Uploaded Image" button.  I fail to see how anyone could get any part of that wrong.

I just downloaded a copy of the first image in your post and attempted to change to that as an avatar with the same result I've been getting.

I have tried this from several computers and used current versions of both FireFox and IE and cannot get an avatar to display.  The status line at the bottom of the browser indicate that the file is getting uploaded to the forum server but is never displayed.

I'll second what Vernon says!

There is something out of whack with the forum. My first issue was not being able to see any of the avatars while logged in. I went to another computer at a different location and met the same results. My second problem is that I deleted my avatar and tried to reload it thinking it might be the source of the problem. Now that i deleted it, I can't upload anything as an avatar. I also tried to upload an avatar at the second location on a different machine and still had no luck.

As Vernon says, how can you go wrong? You only have two choices, upload one of the Kalmbach provided preset avatars or hit browse and upload one of your own. Either way, no dice. The system acts like its downloading something but all you get is the "faceless blob".
