This seems to be much ado about squat.  Time to find more tasty bits....they're out there.

Matt,

You got your money back before you slandered wholesaletrains with this post.  Now, they need their reputation back.

First, you slam the company, then you say, maybe it wasn't them, knows.  Exactly, who knows.

You owe wholesaletrains a retraction and an apology.

When I saw the title of this post, I assumed that the OP had a problem with merchandise.  Now, it turns out that you placed an advanced order and you are still waiting to receive it.  Have you even contacted wholesaletrains about this issue?

Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum.   Question

I personally use two checking accounts. One had a debit card and the other is for paper checks only. When I want to order on line or over the phone I transfer funds to the account with the debit card. I normally keep around $10.00 in the account to keep it open. Both accounts are free.

We have to get used to the fact, that there is no guaranteed safety in the internet. The only way of avoiding our credit cards to be compromised and our accounts to be depleted is not to convey such delicate information through the web.

I don´t do internet banking and I don´t submit credit card data to anyone. I usually do business only with suppliers that I know quite well (if not in person) and make prepayments, often harvesting an extra discount.

It is very troubling though that their site is not encrypted. That's not good for an online retailer. Why don't they secure their site?

Did a quick test - went to http://www.wholesaletrains.com, ordered an item and went to checkout (before canceling the order, since I had no actual need for it).

Doesn't look to me like their "site is not encrypted". The checkout page uses https, and has a valid SSL certificate issues by GoDaddy, with the current certificate having been issued on March 17th 2010 - i.e not issued last week or any such thing ...

Could of course theoretically be that they have had a break-in through some other approach, and someone has gotten hand of credit card information in some form. Or that some ex-employee had sticky fingers or whatever. I have no way of knowing whether that has happened or not.

But the checkout part of their site seems fine.  So, let's not run around and spread unfounded rumors here, eh?

And the OP, if he has cause to suspect that his credit card information was compromised after buying from this company, most definitely should contact the company and ask about whether they have had a security incident. If they have a vulnerability, it obviously should be fixed.

I just recently ordered from them. But I use a prepaid credit card from my bank with only a limited amount of funds, when I want to order something online.

I solved this problem myself some time ago by using a "dedicated" card for my model RR purchases with a $1000 credit limit, if I need more in there I simply transfer the funds from another account.

Since I did this I've had 2 times where someone tried to "pirate" my card and go past my limit, the bank caught it immediately and contacted me about it and they handled the legal stuff.

Best way to make sure you don't get caught in this situation is to limit the amount available as most any person with larceny in his heart wants to score BIG, as soon as they get rejected they move on, or that's been my experience anyhow.

Mark

P.S. Have you contacted "wholesaletrains" about this matter or is this just another one of "those" rants?

I've ordered from Wholsaletrains many times in the past. In fact as recently as two weeks ago I purchased an MRC wireless system and a Bachmann On30 Climax. This is an excellent company with very good prices. I recommend them without hesitation.    TWB

I myself have purchased from wholesaletrains.com on a number of occasions over the years and have never had an issue with them.

I see "wholsaletrains.com" in your topic line...ie a mispelled URL.

Did you get tricked by a counterfeit website playing on the name of wholesaletrains.com?

no, that was a typo.....and if it wasnt them, then its the mother of all coincidences, in my opinion.....unsecure site, their privacy policy has some holes in it, and other people have had the same problem

I know because the last time I had used my card prior to wholesaletrains, was on a site 3 months ago ( a site which i have ordered from for years AND is a secure site).   I placed an order on wholesale last week and now noticed that is not a secure site and all this suspicious activity has come about in the last couple days.  I have also gone back and read other posts in this forum and now see I am not the only person to have this happen to me from wholesale.

That doesn't prove it was a wholesaletrains.com issue.

A card can be compromised anywhere, anytime. They are often sold to thieves at a later date and used at an even  later rather than immediately, so the owner of the card is not suspicious that the card was compromised.

In my case, I had not used my card in the six months prior to it being compromised. Then my CC company called me one day out of the blue to ask me about charges. There were hundreds of dollars in charges for airline tickets overseas and for a {rather large} Cell phone bill at AT&T {$264.00} and other charges in the hundreds of dollars at a time in the past week prior to them notifying me. I was stunned.

I had to specify these were NOT my charges and file a report and fill out a paper for them after they cancelled my card and sent me a new one.

I haven't a clue WHERE or HOW or with WHO {business} it got compromised. Chase never told me if they even knew.

FOrtunately I did not have to pay any of the illegal charges, naturally.

Fortuntely I had a good CC company {CHase} who was on the ball and caught suspicious charges right away.

If you order from there and punch in your credit or debit card information you might as well just give your card to some stranger because the outcome will be the same.  Someone stole my info from their site but luckily all the attempted transactions were rejected.  If you want to order do so over the phone

Not the first time I have heard that. Was warned like 5 years ago about it from the owner of my LHS.

HI

You need to provide more information before you go slamming any business when your card got compromised.

I have one CC I use for ALL internet purchases. I use only the one card on purpose. If it gets comprimised I know it got compromised on the net, though not always WHERE. That, once the fraud is reported to/by your CC company,  is for your CC company to pursue to find out where and who is responsible and prosecute in accordance with the law.

I have purchased from wholesaletrains.com for 4 years and never had a problem with my card. THis spring my card got comprimised SOMEWHERE on the internet. ANd it most likely wasn't from them {because I hadn't order from them in awhile-instead I bought at their store with cash in person}.

HOW do you KNOW FOR A FACT that it was a wholesaletrains, com issue?? Is that the ONLY PLACE YOU EVER USED YOUR CARD???

If not, unless wholesaletrains.com had an issue with the billing of your card, for which I AM SURE they would have notified you and corrected the error as soon as they knew about it, then you can NOT point a finger.

The people at wholesaletrains.com are good people.I know them form doing business with them for 4 years.

Anywhere you use a card.....even in person.....your card can be comprimised...

The biggest offenders? restaurants where they disappear with your card to run it through and can copy it out of  your sight. Another place is any mall or business who uses a wireless SATELLITE link to process your card. The satellite link can be intercepted.

ANYWHERE, ANYTIME you use a card, it can be comprimised.

I also NEVER use a debit card..it canbe comprimised and clean out your account. ALWAYS use a credit card. Bad credit? get a Secured Visa or a reloadable Visa card to use for purchases it provides you with more security if it gets compromised and won't drain your bank account.
