NFL train question?
Posted by cgrubb80 on Thursday, July 1, 2004 10:58 AM
I'm purchasing the Hawthorne Village Dallas Cowboy train. The engine is a Bachmann and it is heavier than normal Bachmann engines. First, is this a Spectrum? Second it came with a "B" unit that is unpowered and I wanted to know how I could go about powering this? Any help here would be appricated. All eight wheels are used for traction and the wheels don't have the rubberband on them. It seems similar to an Athearn engine.

It is a newer standard Bachmann engine, they have been upgrading all of thier locomotives' drivetrains in the past year or so.

To power the unpowered unit, the easiest way is to get another powered unit, and swap components as required. You could order the parts, but buy a whole locomotive is a great deal cheaper.

Thanks I have looked at the catalog and I can't even find a B unit so I can't really do that at this time. I lost the instruction to it but have ordered another set where I bought the engine.

Today's St. Louis Post Dispatch had a flyer for the Rams version of this train. Since this neatly combines the first loves of my two young'uns, I am mildly tempted. Close to $70 for a basic Bachmann locomotive that has a street price in regular livery for $25 seems a little steep. I have zero experience of Bachmann as I had been advised against them by friends and the LHS. Having said that, there seems to be a lot of good words about the Spectrum line of products on this and other forums. Is this NFL train basically a cheap low end locomotive and rolling stock marked up outragiously?

My out will be that the Rams were not is St. Louis in the early 60's so it does not fit my layout time era!!!!

I've also seem advertisements for a Tennessee Titan version of the train. Comes with an FA+B unit with full dome coach. I'd watch for end of season closeout specials on these trains. Especially if your favorite player gets traded or retires.

I'm also curious if there are any more Super Bowl cars being produced. It would be fun to have the train pull a complete set of 30 NFL teams.
