Congratulations on getting up and running.  You certainly a long way from Central VT, but your shed looks a lot like the one I go by each time I go into the city.

There was some movement on the prototype, but something happened in S Carolina (?) that seems to have canceled the order.  Now gondolas loaded with granite chunks are sitting on any track that they can get them on.

Keep us posted.

Have fun,

Thanks Cowman. I'm sorry you switched from dairy to beef production, but I understand. No one local wants to do the work, and the price of milk has been criminal. Every time I see a bottle of water that costs more than a half gallon of milk.......

I grew up on Roxbury Mountain, East Warren side. We used to head to Barre & Montpelier to go to Harry's back in the day (big trip!) I'd love to do the whole quarry area and Montpelier Jct, but all I can really to is an approximation right now. I'm planning on doing a small cutting shed or two in Barre, and at least Allen Lumber in Montpelier.

I'm trying to model 1956, not live in it.

Sounds like you have a good plan to build the Omaha Station. Good luck building your station, make sure you post up progress pics of it.

Actually, I have a long term dream of creating a diorama of the entire Omaha Union/Burlington station complex. I'd need to kitbash two Union Station kits to build the Burlington Station to it's proper size. I'd probably have to scratch build the Union Station which would be quite a challenge with its Art Deco design. Then I'd also need to scratch build the connecting concourse which was angled at the point where the 7 platforms of Union Station were connected to the 2 platforms of the Burlington Station. At it's peak in the early 20th century, these two stations combined to be the fourth busiest passenger facility in the country as it served both north/south and east/west lines. Classic Trains recently showed a bird's eye view of this vast complex.

This is all probably a pipe dream since I probably would not even attempt it until I run out of things to do on my operating layout, but it is fun to think about anyway.

Crandell,

You are correct, it was a Life Like kit. I just purchased 5 of them @$6.98 from Walthers; on sale. I have been selling them on Ebay to support my RR. The stairs are a little of a problem but I have been adding a 1x8 on the outside of all stair stringers to solidify it. Works nice but is a little of a pain.

Excellent work by Everyone!!!

This is a shot of some of the 'implement train' flat cars I've been working on. There are Athearn, Motorart, Wiking, Siku, & Norscott units on mostly Intermountian & MTH flats. I attached them to the cars with heavy liquid paintmask & latex mould making mediums, so they would be removable. Some come off quite easily when jarred, but I wanted to keep my future options open. In these pix I have not added the tie down chains or clamps, but they will be added later. I have also been working on some other tractors not in these shots, so more will come. Speaking of that, I wish I could get IH (Case/IH/Steiger) Quad Trac's in HO! I like Green, but I like Red too!

Zak,

That photo is a real grabber.  At first look my eyes are drawn to the locomotives, the two-track in the foreground and the line poles.  Gave me one of those "real or model?" moments.  It wasn't until I looked directly at the backdrop that I saw it was painted.  When I focus on the locomotives the backdrop has the right amount of soft focus.  Nice!

Kansas City Southern locomotive #4621 snakes it's way towards Goochville, and a trip through the yard.

Further down the line, 4621 pauses on the trestle for clearance to enter to yard with a local freight in tow.

It's been over five months since I could run a train, due to the teardown of the old one and a big international move.

So it ain't much for now, but it makes me happy!

Great to see some new contributions to the thread. Don't by shy!!!

OK here is the excursion train loading passengers at Denver Union Station

Very nice scene. I love night shots. I am planning a similar scene on my layout using Walthers Union Station kit which is actually a model of Omaha's Burlington Station, which was on the opposite side of the tracks from Omaha's Union Station. The two stations were connnected by an over-the-track concourse. Although my layout is a freelanced railroad, my plan is to create reasonable facsimile of Omaha's Burlington station which I remember well from growing up in Omaha. I will kitbash it with the CMR concourse. The prototype Burlington station had the concourse extending from the pillars which are trackside. Here is a picture of the prototype with the concourse having long since been dismantled:

Yep that's it. The only detail I added was the Miller Engineer neon sign that the Denver Union Station has. I still need to detail the inside, and add some passengers in and around the station.

Sounds like you have a good plan to build the Omaha Station. Good luck building your station, make sure you post up progress pics of it.

Great stuff again this week guys. Keep them coming.

Here's one from the BRVRR:

NYC GP-40 leads a small freight through the reversing loop on the BRVRR layout.

This is always the best thread of the week guys. Keep the photos and ideas coming. I always learn something here.

Remember its your railroad

In another thread we were discussing modeling standard gage and narrow gage trains (HO/HOn3/HOn30). I posted some pictures of HO standard gage, N scale standard gage, and HOn30 equipment so people could see the difference. I decided to share one of the pictures here where more people will see it: Two locomotives:

  • MEC 616 is an HO scale standard gage 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado
  • The brass locomotive is Sandy River & Rangely Lakes 2-6-2 #23 in HOn30

The reative size of these locomotives is correct. I have seen photos, paintings, and other models of standard gage and 2 foot gage locomotives together that confirm this. Also, the 2-6-2 is a LARGE locomotive for 2 foot gage, other locomotives like the 0-4-4 Forneys are smaller

Tom, love the rocks by the spoon yard, where they made from castings?

Doing something different this WFP, I am showing part of the bad part of the layout. Little back ground  on this section for people that do not know my history. Layout started as a HO Slot Car Track, was pretty good sizes, U shaped and is 4 foot wide and 19 foot long, and the ends where 4 foot wide by 4 foot. Thing to do with slot cars was to use indoor / outdoor carpet. Not the thing to do with trains if you want to make it look realistic, much like the green grass mat's.

Anyhow, I am very slowly ripping the carpet up. This section is the new passenger station passing spur I am working on. This spur is on my A Line. When the spur is in use, I can park a 15 foot long train on the main and run the passenger train. Station spur will hold a 13 foot long train when I want to run freight.

I must say these photos are not that good, sorry! Light coming through the garage door windows did not help at all.

First is a string of hoppers sitting on the main line.

Next I tried to be artistic (shows me not to think) and used a slower shutter speed showing a high speed pass of the passenger train.

Passenger Cars are Con Cor Santa Fe Valley Fliers.

There will be a two lane highway going pass the passenger station, rough mock up of the road.

Road is made from Fun Foam, see the roads posting on the main page. With some advices from Rich, I am sure it will look great when done! Big Smile While not true HO scale, I uses Hot Wheels and Johnny Lighting cars.

For the heck of it, picture from the better section.

Hope I did not make anyone sick!

That looks like the old Revell engine house, now produced by Heljan I think.

It was my first kitbash back in the 1960s. My Athearn Pacific would not fit so I sawed off the end wall and glued on another engine house. I still have it - did some restoration on it 10 or 15 years ago, and am looking for a home for it on my new layout. Smile

It is actually an IHC kit I believe.  Turned out pretty good with not to much stuff to have to really work at to fit right.

It's all the same kit, those dies have been around. I think my kitbash into a factory has bits of all three.

RRCanuck, I am amazed at the lighting in your first image.  Spot on, and it does magic for the interior of your nice structure.

Farrellaa, nice work on the coal tower. I like the Tichy chute!   I have the same kit on my layout, except I'm pretty sure it came under the Life Like moniker.  I had to struggle with the stairs...they didn't seem to fit as per the instructions, but they finally went on okay.

Jarrell, a beautiful crisp shot, as always.

Incredible modeling and detail work on those "Goldens". Show us some more of them. I lost my Golden a few years back, it sure is nice to see these!

Friends of ours bought me some WS golden retrievers for the layout so there is no escaping them at this house, not even in the train room.Laugh
