Do you have equipment from other people's layouts?

How many of you have locomotives or freight cars from other "free-lanced" layouts? Three are represented on my layout. I have a Utah Belt Boxcar, an Ohio Southern coal hopper, and a Milwaukee, Racine, & Troy Gondola. I also have a car from a club in Minneapolis-St. Paul. I'd love to obtain equipment from the Cat Mountain & Santa Fe, Allegheny Midland, and Virginian & Ohio.[?]

If any of these layout owners are out there reading, what do you think of your railroad being represented on others? Flattering or a bit of an invasion? Ever thought of having decals made and offering them to the public, for a fee of course?

I personally dont mind this. If a G&D boxcar showed up on my road carrying Dino feed for John Allen's Dino Switcher it would be routed on thru. =)

I believe Microscale already makes the "Dashing Turtle" set based on the recent MR's Turtle layout.

By all means let this freelanced models show up in the Hobby, no need to be stuck with just UP or CSX.

I have a pair of 'model railroad' cars that are used in my operating sessions(a V&O hopper, and a G&D box car). I use them as the look like a standard railroad car; no wild, far out colors or graphics. I have a collection of convention cars, but they tend to sit in the display case.

I recently picked up a number of cars at my LHS from a fellow who was changing scales. These cars are all Athearn, with Kadee couplers & wheels, and properly weighted. I paid $3 each since they were "used, private road"! They will work just as well on my future layout as anything that is say, NYC, PRR, UP, or N&W. Just because a railroad is not prototype doesn't make it less real, so I feel we should throw anything into the mix. I also still have a few of the cars I painted for my first layout, although they have a different road name. I think sharing or trading or giving away decals is a pretty cool idea, as it reinforces the whole concept of a freelance road being real. Just don't ask for anything from my Great Lake Central yet, as I still haven't had any decals made up or a paint scheme designed!!

My father was a huge John Allen fan, and about 10 years ago he built a 34 foot overton combine and and painted and lettered it for the G&D. He recently gave it to me, and I'm planning on running it on my up and comming Feather Falls and Foggy Bottom railroad. Since I can't stand the thought of repainting it, I'm going to run it under the notion that The FF&FB bought it used from the G&D and couldn't afford to have it repainted.

I have a few myself. The Ohio Central hopper, a couple of MR and NMRA cars, Great Gulch &Yahoo Valley car and some others. They deliver good to industries too.

Ive got a few also. V&O and Allegheny Midland hoppers and boxcars, some local club cars, and a bunch of FCSME club cars.
I can touch them, I can see them, therefore, they must be real![:D]

The NMRA http://www.nmra.org/ has an ongoing Heritage Line where they have one time runs of cars lettered for deceased famous modeler's railroads. The Living Legends Line is the same, but for modelers still alive. They come out about once a year in Z, N, HO, S, O, and G scales. Some back issues are still available. You do have to be member though. Some are RTR and some are kits, in S scale most are kits. I have most of them and as I get them built, I'll use them all.

In addition, I have examples for the MR&T, Seaboard Central, Pine Tree Central, Alkali Central, Carbondale Central, Turtle Creek, Great Gulch & Yahoo, Susquehanna Northern (Carsten's layout), and others!

I have cars from the MR&T,R&MC(shortline on the old AM),V&O,AM,Scioto Valley Lines(The Columbus,Oh Model Railroad Club),Ohio Southern,Ohio Western(Marion Oh MRR Club) and several cars that I traded with some of the forum members on the forums I am on.[:D]

I have a car lettered for the Sacramento Belt Line--I do model the Sacramento Belt Line, but there were never any cars or engines lettered for it (it was run by Central California Traction and Sacramento Northern.) But a free-lance modeler did build a free-lanced layout based on the real SBL and lettered cars for the "Sacramento Belt Line" and one of his boxcars ended up at a swap meet! I wouldn't mind having a G&D boxcar or two, and actually really like the idea of having rolling-stock from freelanced lines on my layout.

I have a couple of beat-up gondolas labeled for IFTCO (Interstate Freight Transportation Company), a free-lanced line that my dad and I built about 20-25 years ago, but they aren't approved for running on the SBL yet (not yet retrofitted with Kadee couplers and Intermountain wheels.) The paint job is primitive (crudely hand-painted by a 13 year old with white Testors model paint) but they have sentimental value, so they'll be used for shipping scrap and such someday...

I own an MDC Roundhouse G&D Eagle's Nest Combine car, but that's mainly just a display piece. I have an Athearn GP38-2 dummy that I bought with some used sutff on ebay that's painted black with red ends nd decalled "JVR" on the side, which I assume must have been somebody's home road. It looks relly good and I use it as leased power on my layout.

An antique store in Regina, Saskatchewan has a bunch of old HO rolling stock that someone painted up for "P.B.&W.": "Pile 'O Bones and Western." "Pile 'O Bones" used to be the nickname for Regina because in it's very early years before it really became a city, it was a place where buffalo bones were piled up to be sent off to be made into fertalizer. I wouldn't mind having one of these cars on my layout because of the local connection, but the store is charging $20 a piece for them! Many have wheels and stuff missing. They've been sitting there collecting dust for at least five years and guess what-nobody's buying them.

I have a couple such as a Davies Steel gon, a Davies Steel coil car, and an Ohio Southern coil car. Keep an eye on eBay as I have seen V&O cars appear there from time to time. Be diligent and you will eventually find them.

the only one i have is a Great Lakes Eastern (GLE) SD70I. right now, i cant remember the guys name that i got it from but he decided to change eras ans sold a bunch of his stuff on ebay. you can get GLE bethgons factory painted from LBF.

I have several cars lettered for MR's "Dashing Turtle" line on my layout, too. You can also find some cars lettered from my previous layout, the Wolf Mountain Short Line.

I bought a box of ore cars labeled for PJ Mining recently on eBay. I just liked the paint scheme. [:D] I have several private road name engines I mix in as the whim hits.

A three pack of RTR Intermountain cars is now available decorated for the Allegheny lines merger. A V&O Boxcar, an AM 3-Bay Covered Hopper, and a VM 2-Bay Covered Hopper. Both HO and N scale versions are available.

When I ordered my set, I suggested the Cat Mountain as a possible future release.

I also recently picked up a Missouri, Kansas & Quincy boxcar on Ebay.

I usually take a souvenier every time I visit a layout.....a car, loco, small structure, something like that....keeps my costs down...[:D]

Many years ago, Train Minatures offered hoppers in private road schemes. I picked up a V&O and Ohio Southern. I know they had a few others.
