Crandell - I´ll remember that Angry

C´mon, folks, this thread is as dead as the dodo. This is not Facebook, this is a platform, where a bunch of crazy folks like me exchange views, share experience and gain knowledge. That´s more than the so called friends in the popular social media can offer - a lot more!

Friend or not friend, that´s not the question, so I take the liberty of locking this thread. Anyone who wants to feather and tar me for it Whistling

The more I think about it, the more uses I find for Your Friends.

Wouldn't it be great if they included in your profile the avatars of those who requested to be Friends but you rejected?

Hmmm, maybe that is not such a good idea.  They might include in your profile all of the avatars of those whom you requested to be Your Friends, but who rejected you.   Grumpy

I am not one to revive old threads, and I hate when others do it.

But, how did I miss this little gem of a thread from a year ago???   LOL

I love the fact that Crandell rejected all 15 requests from other Forum members to be friends.  I knew better than to ask him in the first place.

And then there is galaxy with no friends.  LOL   (But we still love you, galaxy).

I have never quite grasped the concept of the Your Friends feature, but how meaningful can it be when Motley is one of my Friends.  Laugh  (Just kidding, Michael).

In closing, I would like to propose a feature where you could add  screen names of forum members that you detest.  LOL  Wouldn't that be fun?

Deleting a duplicate post of yours in the Friends thread, Joe.  It's okay, my own posts are showing up twice, too.  I have reported it to Craig and Wade.  They need to fix something.

It is well known I am an old cuss, but I get junk throughout the day about someone on Facebook wants me to be a friend or whatever.  When I get one, I just delete it.  At my age, I have more interesting things to do than sit on a computer all day talking to different people via the keyboard.  It may be the "in thing" for the younger adults and kids, but I don't spend all day playing on the computer.  Being retired I don't have to be bound to one anymore, even though I have a desktop and two laptops.

So if Kalmbach thinks it is being "in", that is their call and their problem.  Not mine.  I come out a few times a day to see if there is anything interesting or informational, and then go back to the basement.  After all, the whole reason to retire was to get away from the outside world and enjoy my remaining years.

After this I am sure I don't have to worry about "getting any friends" and that is fine.  there are some on this forum I enjoy bantering with, others I wouldn't want to find in my basement.

Hey, Bergie, it's good to see your avatar again.  How's life treating you?

On other forums, you have to have a mutual "friendship" agreement to exchange private messages.  Is that what's going on here?  I tried to find the "private e-mail" thing here and I couldn't.  Is that because I'm not "friends?" with that member?  Or did private e-mails go away?  I hope not, because you can't attach files to the "conversation" boxes, and that's what I wanted to do in this case.

I could be wrong, but isn't the friends feature simply a way to have quick access to the people you want to either (A) watch their posts or (B) have quick access to their account in case you need to contact them?

It's not meant to be a popularity contest and little if anything should be read into who has who on their friends list. I personally don't feel that a moderator having one member on their Friends list is any indication that they would give that person preferential treatment of any sort.

Just my two cents.

Geared Steam

 Geared Steam:

It says I have made 6 requests to be "friends", apparently anyone I have PM'd in the past is considered by the new software to be a friend or an unanswered request to be a friend. I deleted most of them except for the cool dudes here, those are still open.  IdeaSmile, Wink & Grin

I received a "friends request" from you in my email. I don't know if I qualify as a "cool dude" here or not. But, as I have stated, I am not accepting it or any other such offer with no disrepect meant and total indifference to everyone.

You apparently didn't read it, nor have sense of humor. No, you didn't qualify and that request fell into the same category as the others-deleted. No disrespect mind you, I really don't take this stuff that seriously. Laugh

Yes, I did read it {the email} and found some humor there, and also hence my remark about being a "cool dude" here!. Smile, Wink & Grin  I did not realize that you had requests open to those you had Pm'd in the past as that did not seem to happen to me. I just thought, in case you were serious, that I would clarify that I wouldn't accept IF you were serious!  Wink AS I have said before I have found the "friends" thing on another forum to be a scandalous waste of time, energy, and bandwidth. More people cry in their coffee and start effectively bogus threads jsut to make a point, jab or dig at someone who has blocked them, or has banned them from their "friends list" so they can't post to a thread. {then they wonder why they are banned}.{ I suppose us here in this thread against the friends idea could be considered to be crying in our coffee}.

This is a free forum for all who choose to register here to use in a good civil manner. Everyone should have a fair right option to post an opinion or advice to a thread unless they use foul language, are vindictive towards a poster or start a "flame war". Perhaps the friends idea is good to some, and perhaps will work out well for them, but as an above poster remarked, it seems that too many are NOT in favor of the "friends game" for whatever reason than seem to be  for it. Perhaps they have run into problems with such on another forum and found it to be of little good use. I suppose my statements here could be considered to be SoapBox

We should always be thankful to trains.com for the free use of this forum, be thankful for the upgrades tehy spend money on, whether we like or use all of it's features or not. Let us always remember that.

It's a sad commentary on the typical person's state of mind if it would be looked on as some negative sort of "favoritism" for a moderator to accept some people as friends and not others. We sure are generating new generations of whiny no self esteem people who probably ought to just shut their yaps and realize life isn't fair if this 'hurts' them.

I'm locking this post (if that even works) because I'm REALLY holding back a lot here.

Since almost all  people here are anonymous, there are only two contributors to this forum I've knowlingly met and spoken with for  more than a couple sentences with face-to-face.  There are a couple of other people I've met asking if I was The/that Mark Pierce who posts on the MR forum.

Hi Maxman.

In this version of the software PM (private messages) are called Conversations.  There are a couple ways to send a message to another community member.  The basic ways of doing this though are by clicking the Start Conversation link in the lower right hand corner for a users post.  See screenshot below for reference.

Alternatively you can send a message to a member by first going to their profile.  You can view a members' profile by selecting their avatar or screen name anywhere on the site.  From their profile then there should be an option at the top for starting a conversation.  See screenshot below as an example of your profile.  If I wanted to contact you personally I would click the Start a Covnersation link.

Hope that helps.

Craig Kuhlow

Hi maxman.

I'll look into the highlighting of the quotes when I have a chance.  It was mentioned a couple times in the following thread for your reference.

http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/t/179103.aspx

Members still have the ability to send private messages to one another, most definately.  What I was referring to were some options that are available to you in regards to who can contact you.  If you go to the edit profile page, (if logged in you can access this page by clicking here), and then scroll down to the area called Conversations Configuration.  In this area you can choose who you can receive messages from.  By default this setting should be set to Everyone, meaning anyone can send you message.  However, if you wanted to update these settings you can change it so that only your friends can contact you, or no one at all if that is your preference.

Sorry about the confusion in regards to this.  I hope this clears things up a little.

Craig:  Thank you for the answer.  But I'm still missing something with the PM/e-mail capability thing.  Before there was an option to do a PM/e-mail I thought when you had a contact option.  I'm just not seeing those two options pop up anywhere now.  Am I not looking in the correct place, or are we calling them something other than PM and e-mail now?

Thanks
