REAL (Prototype) Railroads use engine multiples to pull longer trains, so why can't you? Union Pacific / Southern Pacific / Cotton Belt / Western Pacific are now one railroad. Here in S.P. territory we see UP and SP lash-ups all the time. Same for BN blue, green,/ Santa Fe blue, red, / and BNSF in the same consist, across the Columbia river.

With passenger equipment it was common for one engine per 4 -6 cars over flatlands. Santa Fe used 2 sets of 4 diesels on 20 -21 car trains up Cajon.
Since you are using the word 'carriage' (carrige) instead of 'cars', I take it you are from the other side of the pond (Europe).
