NMRA Convention?

Anyone going to the NMRA Convention in Seattle July 4-10?

A friend and I are attending the National Train Show on July 10. It's a little more than a day trip. But, no, I'm not attending the NMRA convention.

I went to Toronto last year and am planning on Cincinnati next year, but decided that Seattle was farther than I wanted to travel this year. Three of my buddies are going, though.

Yep, I'll be there. Am giving a clinic on DCC tips and tricks with a larger layout, and will be speaking about my scenery techniques at the SIG banquet on Friday.

Should be fun ... looking forward to it!

I was planning to go for the public show over Fri-Sat however that's not looking too likely at present - very disappointeed that I'm gonna miss it.

No, they held a full program for the whole week. It was a very good convention. It got a fair amount of coverage from those magazines which attended. Depending on which magazines you read, however, you may have come away with the mistaken impression that it wasn't held.

My operating group hosted over 100 attendees at operating sessions we held on our 25' x 50' Wabash-prototype portable layout in one of the ballrooms at the convention hotel during the week. These were a series of full-blown three-hour sessions run with timetable & train order dispatching (and plenty of instruction, to take the mystery out of it). Anyone registered for the convention was welcome to sign up and try their hand at it. This was the first time that something like this was ever held on-site at an NMRA National. The overwhelmingly positive response far exceeded our most optimistic expectations.

One outcome of the Toronto Convention was the founding of the Canadian Association of Railway Modelers (see http://www.caorm.org).

You and your group are to be commended for offering this sort of instruction on prototypical operations! I try to make my Siskiyou Line layout open to newcomers for the same reason -- I am thoroughly sold on the enjoyment value of a well-done prototypical op session.
