I gonna say the Southern Pacific Black Widow paint scheme like on the 3s and 7s. Santa Fe's red warbonnet is second.

What do YOU think was the coolest scheme on any F unit?

The Rock Island passenger "Rocket" scheme on their F7As (all three of them).
Next best is the RI red and black freight scheme, IMHO.
But then again, I even like RI maroon, so what do I know ???!!

That would be my second favorite... But I have a lot so I'll post my top 5:

1. CB&Q "Greyback" scheme
2. RI Rocket scheme
3. CNW Yellow/Green
4. GM&O 2-tone red/maroon
5. Western Pacific California Zephyr F's

I like the great Northern F units. I was so stoked when I saw that the BNSF had a paint job similiar. They rock!!

My favorite paint scheme is the Northern Pacific Passenger "pinetree" from 1946. Great choice of colors and accents. Also, the Milwaukee Grey & Orange, and I have to admit Soo Line Red & White looked good on the cowls. Of course, BN Green is a favorite as well.

Not Warbonnet. Too cliche.

The best paint scheme on the F units would, to me, be any and all-- except Ontario Northland"s blue/yellow and maybe CN's and offspring green/yellow.

The body style of the F's are what really made them attractive. Asking what was favorite paint scheme on them is like asking preference of jeans/dress/swimsuit (not all three at one time hopefully) on your wife or girlfriend or favorite model or actress.

The passenger version of CN's classic Green & Gold (With the black lower panels). It looks even better on E units.

After that, I'd have to say ATSF Cat Whiskers.

CGW is one of the most sophisticated schemes. Very tough to mask for. LOL

Just kidding - it's only one color (red or maroon) plus the emblems. Nonetheless, its quite elegant in its simplicity.

Seriously now, while I don't model the road, the CNJ's blue and orange scheme is very handsome. Really there are many striking scheme's - too many to mention. That's probably because the F units can make just about any scheme look good.

I'd have to say the WSOR's paint scheme. Not because there my favorite railroad, but I like the way the Red and the Light gray go together.

B&O Black, blue and gray with gold striping.
or
C&O blue and yellow "bow wave"
Both have impressed me over the years. More recently, I likes the scheme the Maryland Midland used. Shame the locos are now gone

I go with the Santa Fe warbonnet. Hands down the best of all the diesel paint schemes.
Enjoy

- AT&SF warbonnet
- NYC lightning
- CN (can't remember the name)
- CP action red (have a soft spot for that one)
- SP black widow
- C&O bow wave

I have a question... was any F unit painted emerald green and silver? I can't remember any

Hey SWCheif - You have no sen the original CGW red/maroon paint scheme - quite nice, and Microscale has the decal sets. I would have to agree that the ATSF 'War Bonnet' scheme is what most others are measured against!

The Missouri Pacific blue & grey freight scheme. The passenger scheme was equally elegant, but it was applied to E units and PAs not Fs.

Best?
ATSF freight blue/yellow
ATSF Warbonnet - skipped the Kato model, never saw in real life, E8A/B is king!
SP Blackwidow - my favorite
NYC - Lightning Stripe (good stand-in)
B&O Blue/grey - so handsome I would buy F7A/B set in that roadname if the only
one available in N wasn't Bachmann.
Northern Pacific greens is very handsome but I think, passenger.
MoPac - also handsome
Texas (Pacific?) in red/white named after horses
UP is not bad, but the nose looks better grey on top, rather than green.

Hard to say really. Personally I like the Lehigh Valley scheme, though NYC Lightning stripe, SP Daylight, Northern Pacific and Atlantic Coast Line also look very nice. The new RTR F7s from Athearn in NP livery are very stylish!

BEST:
1.1 ATSF Warbonnet with stainless sides
1.2 ATSF Warbonnet
2. SP Black Widow
3. ATSF Blue Bonnet
4 SP Daylight
5. NH McGinnis

I like the UP scheme but against the others it´s to "simple" !!!!!!!!

Today some preserved engines have nice scheme´s too!

WORST:
PRR all schemes - don´t ask why, I couldn´t give an answer! I don´t like them.

I personnally like the RIo Grande's single strip scheme.
Then I would say the SF Warbonnet
and the WS scheme looks very good too.

All N.P. paint schemes. Of course I'm sorta partial to N.P. However, their freight units where black, a color some do not care for, imagine that?!?

FYI, if I'm not mistaken no real F units were ever painted in the beloved Daylight scheme. Only the E' units and Alco PA's ever saw "the light of Day" so to speak. LOL

Beautiful scheme, that Daylight paint, but it never made the F's.

Take care.
