If you are planning on using two powerpacks then you would need to use Selectors, which are designed to switch power in a block between two powerpacks.

If you have only one powerpack then you can do this with the Connector, which is designed to simply turn power on and off to a block. It may not be the most elegant solution, but it would accomplish what you say you want to do. Some things to keep in mind:

1. Whatever siding you plan on leaving/parking the switcher on has to be a separate block so you can cut the power off while you are running on the main line.
2. Wherever you plan on stopping the train on the mainline while the switcher adds/removes cars from the train, the locomotive on the train has to be in a separate block from the sidings (and the switcher) so you can cut power to it while switching.

You might want to see if you can get a copy of "The Complete Atlas Wiring Book" at your LHS (should be about $5.00) which does a pretty good job of explaining basic layout wiring using Atlas products.

Regards

I would go with Atlas DCC. What your layout is set up for is something for DCC. If you you DC you will need blocks. with DCC you won't

Probably the selector, part # 215.

I use both the selector and the connector.

TWO power paks would be helpfull for DC.

'Switchers' negotiate tighter curves than 'Road' engines, and real railroads use them accordingly - with separate crews. Switchers also tend to run differently than common Road engines - P2K slower - Stewart V-1000 faster. What's important is CONTROL.
