maxman that is what I am looking for the brass steps how do they go on?

Mr. Bob D. above can probably help you with this better than I, since it looks like he has already gone that route.  I believe that they recommend you leave a little of the step behind at the sides to act as a support/locator for the new parts.  Bob, your turn now.

A-Line makes HO scale brass steps for EMD GP's and SD's including the  GP60. A while back I did a super detailed GP40-X from a railpower shell before Athearn bought RPP and brought out their GP40-X.  One detail I added was the brass steps and they are fairly easy to install.  When I get home I may be able to help you further as the chassis I used for my GP40-X came from a P2K GP60 and I may still have the shell if you want it.

Rambo:

I could be off-base on this one, but you might check Details West (I believe they're still in the current Walthers catalogue).  They are a company that deals exculsively in diesel locomotive detail parts.  There's a possibility that they might have replacement steps for that particular locomotive.

Just a thought.

Can I replace the steps  without replacing the whole shell?

What steps?  I don't see any separate steps shown on the exploded view drawing: http://hoseeker.org/lifelikeenginediagrams/lifelikeprotogp60pg3.jpg , and even if there were, I doubt that Walthers has any of those kinds of parts.

If that is the correct drawing I do see the steps in it and they are integrated into the walkway platform as TA462 suggests. They are definitely not separate by themselves.

However, you could very well be right that trying to find that piece as  a replacement part my be hard to find, but I would still stand by my suggestion to call/write/email about getting a new piece to replace IF it is available it would be from  the manufacturer, whom I was suggesting he contact. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Ebay may be a place to find a crappy model from which he could scarf the steps and/or platform piece from to replace.

Or, as said, he could scour Walthers just in case....

Or he could possibly fashion new ones out of materials available at teh hobby shop if he is able.

How badly are they damaged?  Is the body shell totally smashed, or did you somehow manage only to break the step portion but the shell corner is salvageable?  If it is only the step portion, you might be able to replace them with the step kit that Aline, Protopower West sells.  Here's a link to what they look like: http://www.ppw-aline.com/images/dslsteps.jpg

My best guess would be not unless they are a separately applied detail and not part of the whole shell molding itself.

If they are a separately applied detail piece, write/call/email to find out about getting a new set.

If they are part of the whole shell molding, and If it can't be glued back the way you have the pieces, your next possible choice may be to try fashioning a new set out of matching styrene?.

Otherwise, I see no other choice but to replace teh whole shell.
