Posted by scribbelt on Friday, June 18, 2010 12:44 PM

Hello, I would like to know if someone has ever built an HO scale "Lobster trap"?

I made a Google search and found that only Bar Mills makes a Lobster trap kit.

Thanks and have a nice dayWink

There was a MR layout article (may have been GMR but I don't think so) that had a real cool lobster scene.  He took a piece of plexiglass for the water surface and put waves of gloss.  He had a rope off a boat, through the plexiglass and "under" the water to a lobster trap.  It really was cool - I would say the "depth" under the plexiglass was a couple of inches.  If I remeber right, there was trap info there too.  It was probably 10 years ago.  They had a side bar on how to do it.  I'll try to look for it when I get back home.

This is the Frenchman River lobster boat kit.  It comes with lobster traps.  Looking at the Bar Mills ones, I suspect they are one and the same.

For those of you not lucky enough to live in New England, the current supermarket price of live 'n' kickin' fresh-caught lobster is $5.99 a pound.

Before I discovered Bar Mills' etched brass lobster traps, I scratchbuilt several for a lobster store I made:

The Bar Mills kit even comes with little etched lobsters!  I don't have any suitable photos of my traps, and the scene they are in is on my modules, which are all boxed up.

Try: Bollinger Edgerly Scale Trains (BEST).  They have the rectangular-style lobster traps.

The wife works in the fishing industry and brings home lots of things for a greatly reduced price.Whistling But I still can't eat those waterlogged cockroaches.Dead But I did scarf down a couple pounds of fresh steamers the other night. Dinner I'll take a fresh cod fillet over the crustys any day.

Anyway to get back on track. If you model modern times you will need the wire cage traps. No one uses the old wood traps any longer. Except for decorations.

Hello, I would like to thank you all for your infos and links in regards of the lobster traps. I went to my LHS and they had the Bar Mills kit, I didn't buy them because I tought I had to glue the different parts but after going to Bar Mills website they mentionned that there's no gluing, that was a relief because I had bad past experiences with gluing ecthed brass parts, you glue both sides of the piece and there's always one side that doesn't want to hold  Angry So I'll probably end up encouraging my LHS and buy the Bar Mills kit.

Thanks once again and

Have a nice day Wink

For those of you who have never seen a real, live, actually-been-used-to-catch-lobsters trap, Bob has absolutely nailed the look dead-on.  Note the difference in the weathering between the traps and the wood deck.  Make sure you super-size the picture so you can see the netting inside the traps, the cinderblock weight, the buoys and all the other details of this scene.  Beautiful.
