Locomotives and Kadee Couplers
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 10:27 PM
I have begun to convert my HO locomotives and rolling stock from an assortment of EZ-mate, McHenry, and hook and horn couplers over to Kadee couplers. I have read through the conversion charts on the Kadee web site. I have a Kadee coupler gauge. I have successfully converted a couple of Manuta freight cars using the suggested No. 38 coupler and a the Life-Like "Teakettle" Steam Locomotive with a recommended No. 28 coupler.

Now I am ready to take on an Athearn U30B and a Bachmann Spectrum SD-45. I have the recommended No. 37 and No. 33 couplers. I have checked out the parts and studied the instructions. After looking over the locomotives I realize that these are not simple conversions. I am looking for suggestions and if anyone has had past experiences with installing Kadee couplers on these or similar locomotives.

While you are waiting for a reply, in the meantime go to www.kadee.com, scroll down to Company infor &
click on E Mail. Their form pops up and send your question to Sam Clarke, coupler conversion technician. THIS IS WHAT HE GETS PAID FOR. Kadee is on Pacific time, so there will be a time lag but he will answer .

Thomas: That athearn U30B shouldn't be any problem! All that really needs to be done,is remove the shell, remove the current coupler and replace with the KD.Should go like this coupler clip, brass centering sping coupler, snap back on frame.OK? I am not sure on the bachman,as I don't have any.I do have some athearn, all couplers replace the same.Just be sure the coupler you are using has a plastic shank,if not the athearn units will short out if you run them back to back.

Another thing you could do with the Athearn U30B is to mount the Kadee coupler in the box that comes with it, tap a hole into the Athearn mounting pad and screw the coupler box to the frame. I have found this makes a very stable and well operating coupler.
