When I worked at Pepsi, years ago, I picked up a complete N scale set on Sun, and called in on Mon just so I could set it up. Actually had 2 of my co-workers stop by and help with the benchwork!

Not really, because I don't have to.

I've been at my present employer for 27 of the past 30 years, with my present department for 15 years and my present boss for 10 years.

I have a good enough relationship with my boss at this point that I don't need to call in sick. I can call in and say "I really need a day of vacation today -- would that be OK with you?" I haven't been turned down yet.

If I couldn't do that, yes I would probably join in the grand old tradition of “mental health days".

I haven't called in sick to stay home and model, but I have come home on my lunchbreak (I live five minutes from work) to work on the layout for a few minutes before running back to work!

I have been fortunate enough to have jobs where I work from a home office for the last 10 years. When I need a break from the PC, I can get up and stroll back into the train room whenever I feel like it!

I haven't dared to go to the train room on my lunch break. Time goes too quickly!

One of the rules of trains is that the slower your engines run, the faster the time goes by.

Never called in but thought of it once or twice when I worked for someone else.
My last full time employment was as a hobby shop owner and I had a "demo" layout in the shop so I could work on it any time when I had a chance. It helped break up the time I spent doing the other fun stuff related to runing a store such as anwsering the phone, waiting on customers, ordering, stocking the shelves doing the paper work and try to figure out how to pay the bills. It made those 16-18 hrs days a little easier.
If you think that your boss is bad now just go into bussnes and become your own boss.[:)] You be suprised how fast you can work your self into a heart attack like I did.[:(]

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

Yeah, but I'm kinda rethinking the whole thing. Next time, I think I would rather
just go to work! [B)] .But I am on the right track(pun intended) to get somethings
done.

Never done that, but I did call in sick once when I had gotten food poisoning from a very bad cheese danish. Gave me stomach flu AND diariah at the same time. I was spewing fluids out of both ends like a hideuos demonic garden fountain that day! If I could have pass on any one day of my life, that might be the day! Just thought I'd ruin your lunch with that little story.[:O]

   Have fun with your trains

Never called off work to work on my layout but I have skipped a couple of college classes last year so I could work on my layout. If I'm still passing the classes and keeping up with my homework, no harm done right?

Sure I've called in sick. I agree, the best time is when school is in secession and the wife is at work.

Lately I've been working second shift on my layout. That is when everyone goes to bed, and I go to work down in the train room. I gets lots done that way, no one to distract you.

I do take a mental health day once in a while. It really helps to lower the stress level when I have nothing planned except to spend some time planning or working on my layout. But I do pay for it with the amount of time needed to write up plans for my classes for that day. All in all it has been a good trade off.

Yup,
I called in sick about 10 years ago and have built two layouts since then. Actually, I got downsized and decided to "stay out sick" for ever and ever.

What??? Are you kidding??? Of course I have. Once, I even called in two weeks straight to work on the 'railroad.'

Can't say I did for the simple reason "I'd miss the boat!"

However I've taken extended coffee breaks to make a soujourn to the LHS any time I get into a port of call with a LHS, with the Captain's blessing I may add!

No, I tend to feel guilty calling out even if I really am sick. If I get a new model and am really psyched, I prefer to go to work and let the anticipation build.

Not yet, but it sounds like a good idea!
I'll admit I've taken a few "mental health" days here and there.
I did call out "sick" once to tour a B-17.
