HOW TO POST AN AVATAR
Posted by richhotrain on Thursday, May 20, 2010 6:10 AM

I should have title this "What They Don't Tell You".

I tried everything with no success, well almost everything.

Here is what you need to do.

If you are logged in, go to My Profile on the right side of the screen.

Click on Update Profile.

When the next screen appears, go to the Avatar tab.

When the Avatar screen appears, the following info will appear:

  • Enable Avatar   Yes   No
  • Update Avatar, Browse, Update
  • Avatar URL: (Remote avatars disabled)
  • Save

Click on the Yes button, then click on Browse (the location of the avatar will be inserted automatically once you locate in on your computer), then click on Update (this is what no one tells you, but you must click on Update to activate the avatar).

The avatar should appear at the top left of the screen.

Then click Save.

Folks, in spite of anything said to the contrary, the size of the avatar doesn't matter.  The software will resize it.

The avatar that I finally succeeded in posting was a JPEG file, 47kb, 634x476

Once you do all of the above, the avatar is posted immediately, at least it was in my case, in spite of the cautionary note that appears saying it may take up to 10 minutes.

Good luck.

Rich

P.S. That avatar that I chose is the 16th Street bascule bridge over the south branch of the Chicago River in Chicago.

Well I have tried to update and upload a avatar about a dozen times now. I did it the same way you listed and got nothing.

I tried updating my bio and get the same thing NOTHING uploads.

So I have decided I don't need the agravation and as now have now stopped trying.

Come on fellas. I am one step up from a moron when it comes to computer literacy and I uploaded my avatar on the first try a couple or three years ago. I will say however that it did take several minutes (5 or 6) for it to take effect.

Catt,

I feel your pain.

If you like, email me your JPG file in a Private Message, and I will see if I can post it as an avatar.  If it works, we can somehow get you up and running.

Catt

Catt,

This did work for me as you can see under my screen name.  I wasn't sure how you wanted the photo of the cat to appear, so I rotated it.  But, you can post it any way you want.

I know this will tick you off, but follow my instructions earlier in this thread and it should work.

If you still have problems, we can walk you through it or ask Crandell to get some Customer Service support.

Good luck, I am counting on you.  Once you succeed, I will replace your cat photo under my screen name with my own bridge photo.

I did follow your instructions exactly, and the onl;y thing that happened was my catt  would simply disappear.

But I am bullheaded and really do refuse to give up.

As you can see my furry little friend is now showing.I had to reverse a couple things in your instructions. After I hit browse I hit save and there he is.

I hereby bestow 50% of the credit for this on you.Big Smile

I know this is a lot later from everyones posts but for a while I've been trying to upload an image to use for my avatar, and it hasn't worked.  I went to my profile, then hit "edit profile", then hit "change avatar", and then a nearly blank (save for a line and x button on the top) box appears over the rest of the site.  Of course, there is nothing I can interact with on the window, so I just have to hit the x and try again.  Has anyone else had this happen?  I havent been able to find a solution yet.

This is a software problem that is several years old.  Hopefully, the new owners will upgrade the forum software, with one result being the ability to update avatars.

seriously, no one has gone and made a patch for this?!  Not even someone who knows coding getting fed up and pasting the code for completely replacing the avatar changing programme?!  Thats so abusrd that it cant be fiction!  What a shame.

The forum has been a VERY low priority for Kalmbach for a number of years.  For the most part, bare necessities have been maintained.  However, peripheral patches for lost functionality will not happen - i.e. unless the new owners decide to upgrade the aging and decrepit forum software.

No one has gone and made a patch because no one in charge knows coding. It remains to be seen what the new owner will do about it.
