Athearn engine accuracy?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 9:46 PM
Which Athearn engines have the out of scale width hoods that accomodated the old motors? The EMD locomotives are relatively easy to spot, but what about the GE locomotives and switchers?

To the best of my knowledge:
1. All 6 of the Athearn U-Boats
2. Baldwin S12 Switcher
3. Hustler
4. Possibly the FM H24-66,Trainmaster. I am not certain of the prototype dimensions of this puppy.

All of the above do not look nearly as obvious as the EMDs. I still like anything Athearn produces and regularly run my "wide-hoods" with my scale hoods.

I made this list from one of the columns in MR a few years back...sorry I didn't make note of the Mo/Yr, but you could search the archives if interested. Athern locos with 'incorrect' hoods are:

SD 9
SDP 40
SD 45
SW 7
DDA40X
FM TRAINMASTER
GE U28B, U28C, U30B. U30C, U33B, U33C

Hope this helps you!
