Dave, I couldn't access my private e-mail box to reply to you (I sure miss the old Forum Format!) but I got your message regarding your preferred adhesives:
Quote - "I use either Plastruct non-toxic liquid weld cement or medium-viscosity ACC."
Thanks for that info . I've been experimenting with Ambroid, CA and Tenax. I'm always searching for the best product to use for a specific application, in this case for structures. I live near a Hobby Town, so I'll pick up some Plastruct Weld Cement on my next trip there.
Since music was mentioned earlier, these are the types of tunes I enjoy listening to that put me into the mood to work on my trains. The beats makes remind me of a passenger train's motion at speed:

Thanks! I had no problem with part fit, but then again, this is N scale, so I can't speak for the quality of the HO tooling.
The roof is just styrene with sandpaper glued on and painted. I added Walther's "Modulars" roof details and some other vent castings from another company I forget the name of (again, this is N scale). The vents don't go all the way through the roof. At least in N scale that's not noticeable.
I've been detailing around the diesel shop so it looks a little more lived in:
Modeling the Rio Grande Southern First District circa 1938-1946 in HOn3.
Dave Vollmer The Enola diesel shop is a pair of Walthers car shops spliced together. I trimmed off some cornice detail and added a flat scratchbuilt roof. The interior of the shop received Heljan walkways and inspection pits.

Guys, please forgive me for bringing up this thread as I am AMAZED that I had not seen it before! Dave, on a 1 thru 10 scale this is a 14!
This is precisely the type of diesel locomotive shop that I want! I prefer the Walthers Car Shop over the Walthers Back Shop. Simple reason: The 1st floor side windows on the Car Shop are lower to the ground level than the Back Shop's, so with the Car Shop you get a better overall view of the locomotives inside.
I currently have one unassembled HO Car Shop kit, but plan on getting a 2nd one and splicing the two together.
Your modifications to the roof are excellent. I was wondering how to modify mine to include exhaust stacks for idling engines. I also have the Heljan Diesel Sanding Rack that includes the raised yellow platforms, similar to the ones you have inside of your building.
BTW: I've read that the walls of these Walthers shops don't always square up like they should. Any trouble with yours?
I've saved your photos and will use them as reference.
Again, I realize that I'm chiming in pretty late and some of the guys might get upset for my bring up an old thread, but I felt that this was worth it.
Michael,
The concrete pads are simply 0.020" styrene. I bought a couple of FOR SALE signs at my local home supply store, which provide plenty of low-cost styrene for roads, concrete platforms, structure roofs, etc.
Nice work on the diesel house, how did you create the concrete platform? I'm going to be building the same one hear soon. Need some help.
Thanks,
Michael

Dave VollmerWell played, Corey...! George, I was half-kidding on using that music (although it might actually work). I've actually thought about doing something with period music (1956 for Pennsy and something really 1980 for Conrail). Nah, no video anytime soon. My website hasn't been overhauled in over a year. That's priority 2 behind finishing Enola.

If you want something really esoteric, I could probably come up with something... My brother was a music major in college and is now the head of the music department at a high school outside of Philly! I'm sure he could suggest something, um, appropriate!

Thanks for posting the Photos Dave. Great work as always. I have been periodically checking your web site looking for an update. The guys at MR should really pay you a visit for an article on your layout.
Cheers!

Well, for 1956, might I suggest "The Wayward Wind" (Gogi Grant version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSPLSo3U46Q ? I mean, it does mention lonely shacks by railroad tracks.
Alternatively, "Long Tall Sally" (Little Richard). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsJVT8Jr_pM
How about "The Great Pretender" (Platters)? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riFR_UxRwaQ

Listen.
The reason I jokingly suggested Unbreakable is because the scene that music is from has Bruce Willis walking through PRR's former Philadelphia 30th Street Station's main concourse.
There are other scenes in the movie around Franklin Stadium where the PRR's elevated freight bypass around 30th Street Station/Penn Coach Yards is visible.

csmincemoyerDave, Are you doing any ops yet with the Enola extension? I had the pleasue when you where in NC to "play" on your layout and it was quite enjoyable for the size. Curious how more staging has enhanced things. Chris

Dave VollmerPA&ERRDave VollmerThanks, Ken... One day I'll do a video. Re-do, actually. It's time to update my current one. It would be either half Pennsy or half Conrail, or I'd do one for each era/railroad. When you do, might I suggest you consider using this song for your sound track? Every time I hear it I can't help but think of a mighty J1 clawing its way up Horseshoe Curve with a long, heavy freight and a couple of snappers on the back!-George George, I appreciate the suggestion. However, O Furtuna, for all of its musical power, as become a tad cliche. Cliche I am not. It occurred to me to use this piece of movie soundtrack music for the next iteration of my layout video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O0dFH3ysSY&feature=related And maybe a little: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqXjr46CZVw&feature=related

Great job Dave,From another PRR fan.TheK4Kid
Looking forward to your next up date David. Are you plaining a video?
Ken
I'll toss in my own thumbs-up. All of your work, new and old, is inspiring.
I worked in N scale long before there was code 55 track, so I laid my own with code 55 rail. It makes a huge difference in the look of N scale. You do great work, Dave. I always look forward to seeing your smiling face next to a post, because I know I can count on wise words and great pictures.
Phil, I'm not a rocket scientist; they are my students.
Dave Vollmer Okay, guys, Enola update time. First off, I HAVEN'T set up a photo backdrop yet, so... That's that. Also, there are any number of people, telephone poles, diesel fuel racks, pump houses, sheds, sanding towers, etc. that have not yet been installed. What you see here is the roughed-in scenery.

Yeah, right Dave, it looks really "roughed-in" to me!
Great work as always, can't wait to see it at the April show.
