Again from the Brass Train Guide: Sunset in 1990 imported six variations of the NYC J-1E. They are currently valued at $275.00.
The Sunset Prestige Series was what you might call an economy model. It was brass but with only minimal detail, compared with other imports. Look at the trailing truck casting and compare it to a Westside import from Mizuno and you will see the difference. Even the cast metal and plastic offerings from BLI look better than the Sunset Hudsons. The Sunsets I have owned are good runners (PRR 2-8-0s) and have been very satisfactory for me. Enjoy your Hudson, you got a pretty good deal at the price.
BTW, the Brass Train Guide was produced by Dan Glasure of Dan's Train Depot. You might want to ask them if they still have one, or when the next edition is coming out. I think you would enjoy having one.
Hi all again!
Thanks soo much for the great info! I didn't even know that they had a Brass Guide!! I also bought a Sunset Models Inc. HO NYC 4-6-4 Walscharts Valve. I can't even pronounce "Walscharts"! Just what is it anyhow?
Can you guys tell me when it was made? I also paid $200 for it, was that too much?
Again...many thanks, Ted
According to the Brass Model Train Guide, PFM imported three production runs of the Mason Bogie, in 1966, 1973 and 1974, respectively. Their current value, in excellent condition, is $550.00. All were built by United and there were a total of 971 produced. Another three were silver plated for advertising purposes and are valued at $1500.00. Mason Bogies were also imported by Balboa, Custom Brass and Joe Works. The latter was a kit.
John.
Hi again!
I have this United Brass Hon3 scale DSP&P Mason_Bogie, that I trying to find out more about! I can find plenty about the real train, almost nothing about this United Brass unit I have. I bought it at a Tag Sale. I'de like to know how old it is, maybe how much it's worth, I paid $200.00 for it...I don't know if that's OK, or too much. Any info, or were I can get it would be great !
Thanks much, Ted
Ted:
United was one of several Japanese brass manufacturers whose products were imported by Pacific Fast Mail (PFM) between the 1950's and 1980's. PFM also imported brass locomotives by Tenshodo and Crown (their top of the line). PFM was an American distributor, not a manufacturer, as far as I know.

Well I guess I have maybe a simple quick question! I always see when United Brass is mentioned, PFM!? Are they the same company, a subdivision?

TeddyB:
Are you meaning modelers who collect brass locomotives as static display items, or modelers who actually purchase brass locomotives to run them? Reason that I ask, is that there are several of us on the Forum here who run brass steamers as we model railroads for which there are no current plastic stubstitutes. For myself, I model Rio Grande standard gauge steam, so my running roster is by necessity about 95% brass.
There are several others on the Forum who model railroads like Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific and other roads that are either not well represented by current models, or not represented at all.
Just curious. If you collect brass locomotives to RUN them, then a lot of questions or comments can be answered here on the MR forum. But if you're mainly a 'collector', then the two forums mentioned earlier would probably be your best bet.

The only one currently running is www.brassbackshop.com
