I went on Saturday morning (about 10:30) when I usually go.  The parking lot was full and I felt it was much more crowded than last year.  I got my usual good tips from examining the excellent layouts, and bought a  few small tools.  I think there were a few less vendors, but I thought the quality and variety of what they had was better.  I saw a lot I wish I could have bought!  The food place was so crowded the four hours I was there, I never did eat, not wanting to stand in a long line.  Usually that isn't a problem, another indication attendance was up.

I missed the announcement on this one but there will always be another one. I go to these shows for two reasons. One is to see the layouts but the main reason is there is a good chance I might find some item that I want that had been discontinued by the manufacturer. Most of what is being sold can be found at my LHS and usually at a lower price but you never know when you'll find a hidden gem. As for the layouts, a lot the modules have been around for years but it is interesting to see the changes that are made to them over time and the new modules that get added.

How was the show?  I had some moving to attend to last weekend and couldn't go.  From 2008 to 2009, I saw a considerable drop-off.  I'm hoping that trend is reversing itself.

I went Sunday afternoon and the parking lot was still almost full.  So lots of people, a number of modular layouts and a train that small children could ride on.  The number of vendors was down slightly from a few years ago but still a good selection.  Some of the vendors seemed to have raised their prices so they could claim a huge sale/discount but there were also the solid ones like Coryville Station, who had  a large quaility selection at resonable prices.  This was one of the few shows I ended up not buying anything.  Not because of the selection but more because I have bought so much recently from the LHS (and I have 10 locomotives on pre-order)  and the manufacturer new releases are down in quantity right now.

Bump.  Reminder that the show starts tomorrow.

One last bump.  I wasn't able to make the show today.  I'll be going tomorrow.

That's a shame. I already bought all the good stuff but left ALL the tyco cars for ya.

You are too kind.  Maybe I'll start collecting Tyco cars Smile

I almost always go to these train Expos when they come to town, and the one thing that would be a welcome addition would be some modeling clinics. I am not sure why there aren't any, but it would be a nice change from the same layout displays and same old merchandise time after time.

While I was there I did hear an announcement of a clinic on scratchbuilding by one of the clubs there. I don't know if there were to be more or not or what it entailed. I very well may go again tomarrow.

I live an hour away from Columbus and might have to sneak over there, but the Expo is coming here (Dayton) March 20th and 21st so I'll do that one for sure.   Will have to try to save up some cash so I'll feel less guilty about spending it.  I haven't been to an Expo before but have made a few other local shows in the past several months, had fun talking with folks, and spent more than I should have on some interesting cars and locomotives.

Ironic indeed.  I just stopped by to ask if the show had been cancelled since I didn't see a listing for it on the "Coming Events" page a while back.  Now I know that it's on again this year.

The show was really good in 2008 but I thought last year, vendors were down by about 20%.  Hopefully I'll be able to make it back and hopefully, the show's previous participants will too.

Hello Is this show more like this is what's new and everything is big$$ or is it more of swap meet kinda thing where you find new and junk on the same table? Thanks Frank

In short, yes, table to table varies in what is there. Prices vary from one guy to the next for the same item but there is much to be seen. I've picked up a brass cab forward for $100, a Bowser 4-6-6-4 for 60, numerous cornerstone kits and many cars. I'll be there bright and early with a fistfull of dollars. With a little luck the wife will put a couple fives in.Big Smile

Tom,

I've been to the one in the Detroit area twice, most recently in December 2009. The GTE show isn't like the WGH show. Much smaller and there are no manufacturers, just various retailers and some layouts. My guess is a lot of the retailers follow the show around the country. There's a lot of so-so merchandise, hats, shirts, and pins. But, if you spend the time, you might find a few treasures at good prices. In December I got 3 Sylvan vehicle kits and a Branchline reefer. And of course my wife found some more figures. I was looking for craftsman kits since I picked up a Microscale one for a good price at the GTE show in 2008. Unfortunately, none were to be found.

Hey Jeff,

Not sure I'll be able to make it but I will try.  Have you been to one of the GTE train shows before?  Is it worth the drive from Cleveland?

I went to the WGH show last year here in Cleveland and I ended up staying the ENTIRE day on Saturday. Shock  The best part for me was the Fremo layout.  VERY enjoyable to watch. SmileThumbs Up

Posted by jbinkley60 on Friday, February 5, 2010 4:12 AM

I am not sure how many saw the recent submission to coming events.  For some reason they just submitted it late last week.

The Great Train Expo show will be in Columbus, Ohio the weekend of 2/13 - 2/14.  I'll be going.  Probably Saturady afternoon.  I hope to see everyone there.
