Now that the M1a is mentioned I just remembered I have one with an NCE decoder in it. Haven't used it after a few hours of track time and it's been sitting in it's box.  Maybe time to put it up for sale.

I just put one on. I used the good stuff from 3M. If your tender shell does not rattle when the whistle blows than the tape is not needed.  I bet it will rattle though. Mine was awful. With the sound turned way down it still rattled and drove me crazy. I put some packing foam in it and it quieted down the rattle but I was afraid the decoders would overheat. Then I saw a post on another forum about the tape fix and tried it.

Yeah, mine rattles real bad. Not sure why some blue lines do that. I'll try putting the tape inside.

I have used small pieces of very thin 1/16-1/8 soft foam rubber on the insides of my tenders for improved accoustics....just be sure it does not touch the decoder.

The M1 tender has screws under it. If I remember correctly there are 2 screws one on each side between the speakers.

While you have the shell off put some electric tape on each side and the inside of the roof so it does not resonate with the whistle blows.

How many layers of tape should I put on? Will one strip on each side suffice? Thanks.

You can find instructions and exploded views here: http://www.broadway-limited.com/supportdocumentation.aspx

That should answer any questions you have about it.

Blue Line M1a tender shell removal

I just bought a TCS decoder to install, but I can't get the tender shell off, the engine, although brand new, came with no instruction manual.

I tried to crank it off by inserting a small flat head screw driver in the slot where the wires that connect to the engine come out of, but the thing won't budge. I don't want to force it because it looks like it will break if I try to crank it any harder.

Is this a model that requires me to remove any screws from the bottom of the tender maybe? Thanks.
