We had a blast. Trains everywhere! I have pics of the O scale layout at Smoky Mountains Trains. I'll try to get them posted tomorrow. I know you love O scale and this layout is impressive! They also have walls and walls of Lionel locomotives and rolling stock, all of which belong to the owner of the museum... Dave

Hey Lupo,
That's a Climax logging locomotive. It's on display at the "Cradle of Forestry Museum" in the
Piscah National Forest, NC. It was built in 1915 and was in service for over 40 years. Dave

thought it was some kind of logging locomotive looks good, is it still operational?
Do you know why they use these strange piston arrangements in logging locomotives ( also thinking of a shay ) ?
has that to do with bad tracks through the forest or more traction power ?

It's restored but not operational, at least as far as I know. It's on display and the tracks just lead off into the woods and end.

Your right about the pistons arrangement. It's a traction thing. I have some pics of a Shay. I took them at the
Little River RR Museum in Townsend, Tn. Here's a picture. Dave

Those are some neat pictures of two of the three types of unusual drive locomotives.

The Shay has vertical cylinders which turn a shaft, and transfer the motion to the wheels through the bevel gears that you can see in one of the photos.

The Climax has it's cylinders mounted at an angle, but I'm not sure why they are, or how it transfers the motion to the wheels.

The third type is called a Heisler, and has it's cylinders mounted in a V, very similar to the engine in most cars. This turns a center shaft and has gears going to the axles. I guess Dave didn't run across one of these in his travels.[swg]

No Elliot, I didn't come across any Heislers.
These are the locos I saw:
2-8-0 Consolidation (Great Smoky Mountains RR)
Three truck Shay (Little River RR)
Climax (Cradle of Forestry)
Baldwin 2-8-2 (Dollywood)
I was next on the list to ride on the 2-8-2 when they shut down due to lighting. Oh well, I ride next year, although I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. Dave

This was at Dollywood. They stop everything when the sky gets dark. The main reason I went to the park was to ride the loco. They start taking names when the park opens for rides on the loco. I was next.[:p] Then the lightning started.

They sit you right on the tender, just behind the cab. They shovel the coal right below your dangleing feet!! Next year you can bet I'll be first in line to put my name on the list. Dave
