More Licensing Contracts!!!!!!!!!!

From the Maine Sunday Telegram.....

"Portland based Maritime Rail Industries has announced that it will now enforce copyright and trademark enforcement of its logo and images. This move primarily affects the hobby industry, and follow similiar actions taken by Omaha -based Union Pacific Railroad and Jacksonville-based CSX Transportation. Maritime's Public Relations Department issued the statement Friday, stating "It's our damn logo and we'll do what we want with it. Take it or leave it. Companies wishing to use the trademark for profit may contact us for further details" Maritime officials have declined further comment at this time."

Ummm.... According to an un-named source allegedly close to key decision makers at Maritime, the licensing fees are going to be somewhere like a twelve pack of good beer or a case or so if its the cheap stuff. Unless you are a good looking girl..in that case just ask nice...and smile. I'm a ...I mean management is a sucker for that trick.

Before I give myself heartburn over an issue I have little control over, I need to ask: By how much PERCENT (%) will this increase the price of a typical model? Unless it's really huge (>25%) I'll most likely endure the pain and keep on buying. I don't like being gouged either, but my blood pressure is high enough already, thank you.

I smell a black-market business opportunity for anybody with an ALPS color printer, blank decal film, and a professional quality digital camera...[}:)]

OK guys, something is wrong here. There is no Maritime Rail Industries. The only railroads that go to Portland are the St. Lawerence & Atlantic, Amtrak, and Guildford. the StL&A is owned by GWI and Guilford is owned by Guildford Rail Systems. Here's 3 things that could have happened: 1. Not a real story, 2. Guilford is the one to do this. 3. dharmon made it up.

The enforcement of logos is very serious business and has many ramifications outside the hobby industry. If they don't enforce their logos you wind up with "scotch tape" or "xerox" copies instead of celophane tape and photocopies. Those situations fall into a cetgory called "Good Will" that is an asset if and when a company is sold or divested. The value can range to hundreds of millions of dollars or if allowed to be used without permission and a recognised generic terminolgy $0. It is an incovenience for us but i don't see any attempt on the part of any railroad to gouge the best supporters and advertizers they have. If you check thenews items you will see UP gave far more to charities last year than they could ever hope to obtain from modelers. We are lucky it doesn't go further than it does.

Trains Editor Mark Hemphill Speaks With Maritime Over Licensing

Portland, Maine - In a telephone interview today, Trains Senior Editor Mark Hemphill spoke with Maritime Rail's Director for Public Relations, Josh Ingue, regarding Maritime's surprise announcement Friday to follow Union Pacific and CSX Transportation's lead in enforcing reproduction of it's corporate trademarks. This action is unique, as it is the first regional railroad to adopt this policy of trademark licensing, and remains an issue which is causing considerable anger amongst railfans and modelers. Mr. Ingue provided the following statement to Mr Hemphill:

"Maritime's policy is in keeping with that of other railroads recently, and is in no way different than that of many companies with registered trademarks. The logos and reproductions are the intellectual property of the corporation and should be treated as such, as they are for say Coke, NASCAR or the NBA for example. We are simply protecting that corporate property and establishing licensing agreements with those parties that wi***o use it. If you look at the terms on our website, you will see that they are not by any means restrictive or burdensome on the hobby industry. The average collector or hobbyist should see no increase in the price of any Maritime licensed item, unless a manufacturer is profiting from this."

Mr. Ingue also added, "All of the proceeds from our licensing agreements go to funding a wide array of community programs that we are a part of. We pride ourselves as leaders in giving back to the community. One of our programs Tags for Tots, provides local youth with ozone friendly, non toxic spray paint for defacing our equipment, to prevent inhalation associated hazards. Another is the Adopt a Lobstah Program which helps socially challenged fishery raised shellfish return to the wild. And last but not least is the Executive Fellowship Program, where after a few years as a management intern, we reward young company executives with lavish gifts and bonuses. You see, any income we receive from license fees will be returned to the community."

I guess if it's in the store in 12 packs or smaller it's good beer, anything sold in 24 or above....probably qualifies as the cheap stuff....but I'm..Ahem..They're not too picky on free beer. Especially the Australian stuff....

Will participants in the Executive Fellowship Program be able to share in the beer which should be flowing into corporate HQ ?

If so, I want to send in my resume!

From The Muncie (In) Dragoon Telegraph
In a surprise move today, the Muncie Industrial District and Western Railway (MIDWest Line) anounced that they would no longer interchange rolling stock with any railroad that demands fees for it's licensed trademark.
Stated CEO and night security guard Diss Gruntled " I refuse to gouge the (model) train buying public by supporting this continued onerous payment of a totally -HEY GET AWAY FROM THERE! Darn meddling kids- uh, where was I?"
Official spokespersons were contacted at Union Pacific, Maritime Rail Industries, and CSX Railroads by this reporter for their feelings on Gruntled's statement and all responded with a mutually supporting reply of "Who?"
The Union Pacific spoksperson went further with a telling, "Where? I....I don't think we go there."
Model Railroad Industry spokesman I.N. Fringement stated flatly "This is the end of all of the whole world and everything!"
In a related story, local banking officials announced they are seeking the removal and possible emergency commitment of Mr. Gruntled.
