NYC caboose
Posted by mike33469 on Saturday, May 22, 2004 3:19 PM
Anyone know where I can get decals for a NYC caboose, for the years 1935 to 1945? I've seached Champs and Microscale with no luck.

try ebay, or try searching the caboose on a search engine like yahoo or google

How hard did you look? Go to Champ's website, go to the HO listings, and go to NYC. There are three NYC caboose sets plus the various heralds. It'll cost you about $5 to full letter a NYC caboose.

Thanks. I guess I didn't look hard enough. Even my LHS couldn't find any caboose decals.

It's been my experience that very few LHS really know what's out there. They know the product lines carried by their two or three distributors, and see the ads in MR, but that's about it. Almost none of them are online, nor do they haunt the various gossip pages (these forums!) to see what's new and upcoming.

That's why it's always a good idea to ask around on these forums. You might not get exactly the answer you're looking for, but you'll at least get a few juicy leads!

Are you sure Microscale doesn't carry them? They have most everything else and NYC was such a major player, I find it hard to belive they won't have them.

Microscale doesn't list an NYC caboose decal, but Walthers still shows "in stock" its own "steam era" NYC caboose decal set.

I'd go with the Champ set, though.

Microscale really doesn't believe that railroads existed before 1960 or so. Look through their decal listings, and you'll see that they're only NOW starting to support steam-era (not transitional era!) railroading. And they're efforts are strange at best. Case in point: they make a decal set for the C&IM steam fleet (Champ's are more accurate), but there's not a single set for IC equipment, pre-1960 (besides passenger). Pretty sad showing for one of the largest railroadsin the nation, which was also one of the last to dieselize! Microscale REALLY sucks in it's pre-1960 freight car decal offerings, which is why they don't have a NYC freight car decal set (you can cobble something together using several of their sets, but that's not very fun, and not completely accurate).

Champ is still your best bet when it comes to pre-1960 freight cars, steamers, and cabooses. Too bad their printing presses have shut down...

I did not do any research into Microscale's inventory. Modeling the N.P., I have found all I need from Microscale and I model the early 1950s, hense my statement.

Champion Decals have been threating quiting the decal market! This is another sad statement about the direction this hobby is taking...RTR vs kit!

Oh well, the world is going to heck in a hand-basket and there isn't much Orson or I can do about it!
