For those who haven't read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, one of the many brilliant points he makes is when talking about selecting a good motorcycle mechanic. Is the workshop tidy and ordered? yes, good. Is there a radio playing while they work? Yes, forget them and go somewhere else. There are a couple of generations of Westerners who have grown up thinking the world needs a soundtrack. It doesn't. You can't concentrate to music. The constant presence of music (and ads, and frenetic babbling DJs and talkback and ...) everywhere these days explains a lot about the loss of Quality. Read the book: Quality is central to Model Railroading. Oh and read it on a beach or somewhere quiet with lots of time - it's a hard book. remember them? Books where you have to think while you read.

And no I'm not a grumpy old 80-year-old. I'm a grumpy old 44-year-old who grew up with Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. When I listen to music, I listen to music. When I'm doing something else, I don't. [:D]

Depends on what I'm doing. Jazz goes with running 1st-generation diesels (I have a CD copy of "Night Train" which even pictures an SP F7 on the case!). More modern equipment goes with more recent music. I only tend to have music playing while operating

At the moment I'm mainly listening to Queen (Superb British rock group, for those who may not have heard of them they're worth a listen), The Darkness (Modern equivelent of Queen, and just as good), and Kraftwerk (German electronica - or so the classification on the CD case says!) - an odd mix!

All Kinds of stuff, could be AC/DCand the B-52's, Or Garth Brooks and Toby Keith, Or Boz Scaggs and Steeley Dan, OR Jimmy Buffett and Meatloaf, Or Glen Miller and Louis Jordan (choo choo ch' boogie), Or Robert Palmer and ZZ Top.
It all depends on my mood at the time and on what I am doing.[:D]

Big band or Jazz when I'm building passenger equiptment, hard rock when I'm installing decoders, softer rock or country when I'm painting. That's what Sweetie has noticed , or at least thats what I think she said. Couldn't really hear her over all the music! [;)]

One thing I will NOT do while working on a project is turn on the "boob tube". There is no surer way of losing one's attention span, only to find out that you have glued yourself to a project [D)]than to turn on the idiot box! [:0]OUCH![:0]

I wouldn't be able to hear the wife asking me where I was as the train room is two flights up from the main floor.
I can't hear her anyway due to the trains & tools being operated but at least I can use those as an excuse!!

Mostly rock, depending on what mood I'm in and what I'm currently working on:

Nirvana, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Korn, Status Quo, Deep purple, Led Zep, The Darkness, Franz Ferdinand, Auf Der Maur, HIM, Placebo, The White Stripes or whatever I may find in my CD collection.

I do listen to a lot of industrial music, though, which may be appropriate for my layout and its emphasis on industrial switching! As for the gothic stuff, well, I do have a weakness for SP's "Black Widow" paint scheme...and hey, Love & Rockets' "(This Train Is) Bound for Hell" is a great song...
