Here in Santa Cruz CA, there's a restaurant with an operating G scale railroad running through the place. (Hugely popular with the kids.) Anyway, they have an operating N scale "ride-on" railroad as part of the scenery.

In March 1982 issue of MR, there were are couple of photos of a model of a garden railway done in HO! It was in France. It actually ran. It says that the locomotive was only 9mm long and ran on track with rails made from fine wire.

I have also seen Z scale used for an amusement park ride on an O scale layout. Diesel loco and gondolas with O scale seat and people.
Enjoy

Yes it has been done with several different scales.
Most common is O track used for 24" narrow guage.
HO is used for 15" narrow guage trams, Gn15 is popular in England.
and a few nutcases have used N and Z in the backyard of a model house to represent a model garden layout on there own garden layouts. A layout within a layout so to speak.
Have fun with your trains

Ok, so I was thinking about trains (as usual[:D]) and I thought of something. Hmmm, I wonder if anyone has used smaller scale trains (HO, N, Z, TT) on a large scale layout. I thought back to a MR show I saw a while ago. The guy had a ride-on (not sure of the scale) layout that went through his backyard and into his basement. In his basement, he had a building with the roof cut off of it. And, inside, you could see little Z scale trains running on a good sized miniature table! The building was, infact, a "locoal Model Railroad Club". He used Z scale to simulate model trains! Has anyone tried this? It's be a neat idea.[:)]
