Loving that box car weathering.  On your layout, is that all plaster cloth? Hydrocal?   Combination?

Almost finished with several E8s and an FP7 set.  Glad I'm unemployed or I would not have the time to do this and unfinished tasks are too stressing.

I still have ice breaker bars to add for the SP and weathering for the CSX and (heavier) for the SP units,

Trains. Cooking. Cycling. So many choices but so little time.

Its plaster cloth over newspaper.  I put the newspaper down, and then cover it with the plaster.  After that dries, I go over it with plaster paris.  It fills in all of the holes.  After that I paint them rock colors (grays, blacks, etc), or use a green paint for the grass (woodland's foliage grass).

Renumbering... thank God for ALPS printers.  I'd go nuts doing those end numbers one by one, especially on 100+ cars!

Robby, I like what you have done.  If you recall mikelhh's wonderful minimalist backdrops and his uncanny ability with lighting, it is very effective.  Before you go on to ground foam and trees, it might be a thought to actually take some images and try for winter scenes....just a few for an eventual library.  Well done, by the way.

Woflgang, you are developing a really nice model area there.  I look forward to more!

Nice clay and sand bluffs with the early diesel running along it up there, duckdog....very nice.

Lee, your skill is exemplary.  It all seems to line up very nicely.

Terry, that is a very nice setting you have depicted there.  Well done!  The water turned out very nicely indeed.  The bridge and piers are very naturally located. Cool

Excellent, as always, DJ! Big Smile

Well it is not grampy or crandell quality but..........

Rivarossi Berkshire haulin some boxcars on my diaroma.  The Berk was remotored and repainted and weathered.  The box cars were an ebay special that had 50+ cars of various types all for $20.00.  Not a bad deal.  All the boxcars had kadee trucks and metal wheels.  So here we go with the picks.

Enjoy the weekend.

Nice pics everyone.

Thanks Crandell for the kind words.

Hey you guys I tried lighting with a 60 watt blue florcent light and a 75 watt spot light incandescent.  What do you think of the lighting?  Is it bright enough?  Does it bring out good color?  This is the first time playing with lights and am looking for a good combo for when I start building a layout.  The bulbs are in the aluminum work/ photographer clamp hoods.

Great start as always!

Robby, nice work on the backdrop.  It adds a lot to scene.  I love your weathering!

Wolfgang, that is going to another great scene on your layout.  Keep the photos coming!

Duckdogger, very nice old diseasally thingeys there, E - F - ?? whatever is which...  I love that Canyon wall.  Bet that took some doing.

Lee nice hoppers and the car is nice too....Whistling

Terry great reflection in the water.  Makes me want to go swimming.

DJ..... WOW!!! as always!  Only thing is since those are Alcos, a bit of smoke would make them more realistic. Whistling

Crandell that has to be one of the most attractive Steam Locos aver built!  Great shot of it as well.

rs2mike, the last shot is excellent!!!  You do great scenery and a Berk always puts on a good show.  The only thing in that scene that detracts at all is the giant oversized ground throw....   Nice shot any way you look at it!  [edit] Personally I wouldn't mix a blue florescent and a standard incandescent.  Make sure that your camera white adjustment is set for whatever lighting you want use.  I am using full spectrum 5600°K florescent lighting on the layout which are "daylight".  Found that the color comes out very accurate with them when I compare the print with the actual layout.  Have fun!

I haven't really got much that is photogenic this week.  I have been sewing and installing a black skirt under the layout to try to give a more finished look to the potion that will be judged for a Merit Award.  Here is a before: ( most of these were done with a flash so not the best....)

and a few in progress:

And finally how the layout now looks as you enter the room from the stairway (this one was done without the flash):

Nice pics all around guys.

I got another new enigne; however, unlike the last several, it isn't a big road diesel.

An older P2K Geep, from the runs that weren't DCC ready. All the factory wiring has been ripped out and a 9-pin plug has been put in so it's DCC ready.

I still have 2 more engines coming in. A GP38-2 and U30C 1776. The U30C has a DH123 already, so I'll take it out of the U-boat and put it into the GP9 and the U30C will have a soundtraxx decoder put in.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Thanks howmus.

This area is really dark and the incandescent made everything really yellow.  The blue flo(cool white compact flo) alone makes it look like a full moon is shining.  I am going to try a warm white compact flo and see how that looks.

Your skirting looks great.  The scenery on yours is awesome as well.  Can we get a tour of the layout in pics?Wink

Thanks you sir!  You can tour the layout by following the links in my signature.  there are all kinds of "under construction" as well as more or less finished shots.  I will very soon be taking the required photos for the NMRA Scenery AP Award.  I may start a thread with them when I do the photos.

I have no idea what you are using for a camera, but even many point and shoot cameras have a listing of various lighting modes.  See if you can find that and set it to incandescent.  It should adjust the color balance for the light.  Incandescent is actually a very good choice for photography as it is a "Black Body Resonator" meaning it contains all wavelengths of light.  Color can also be adjusted in many photo editing programs.  I use Photoshop and the first thing I do is correct the color balance using the Auto Level command.  9 put of ten times it helps the photo....  The other time I back up and do it manually.

Here is a photo done with 2700*K compact florescent lighting.  It was color corrected by photoshop.

Here is a similar photo taken using 5600°K Compact florescent bulbs.  (both have high CRI indexes)

Notice the yellowish (early morning) hue of the first, and the more full daylight color of the second....  Both had the camera adjusted for the color of the lighting.  Particularly compare the color of the "white" bandstand in each photo.  Also notice the blues of the sky and lake.....   Now neither is "wrong!"  They represent the normal color variation of different times of day.  That said..... Good lighting can make a world of difference to how a layout looks.

Thanks for the tips Ray. You can see the difference between the lighting.  My camera is an old olympus my wife bought after high school.  I inherited it when we got married 3 years ago.  Unfortunately she lost the book on it in all the moves she has made over the years.  I will have to dig around on the camera and see if I can make anything out of it.

I keep going back and forth between your two pics and noticing all the differences between them.  Great job.

I finished numbering and assembling my only Wisconsin and Southern SD40-2 this week, WSOR #4009. Hopefully I can pick up a few more to flesh out my roster a bit. It's going to feel odd among the GP38s, the GP7 and MP15.

I love this time of the week, the photos you guys post are always such a great way to let me know that this hobby is in VERY good hands! BowBow

Well, here's a shot of my 3-cylinder Mountain #1605 blasting east out of South Yuba Canyon with a heavy freight.  The 2-8-8-2 on the upper westbound track is returning light to Deer Creek from a helper assignment on Yuba Pass.

The secret of #1605's success:  Two 2-8-2's, #1204 and #1208 putting some considerable muscle ahead of the caboose.

Been a while seines I have posted or worked on my bench. I went into foreclose Dec 2008. Disapprove I work straight commission and will make $25,000.00 less this year? I have had the house for 16 years, and Bank can see it is not my fault and they are working with me. So with a renew hope of keeping the house I started working on the bench.

If anyone here is going through Forbearances, PM me please. I don't totally trust them!

Anyway, been a good train weekend. I bought a custom painted SOO hopper today from K-10 Model trains.

All so picked up another UP 5.

This where I left off 9 months ago.

Simon 1966 up grade a kit basked Santa Fe Dash 9 to DCC for me. I bought it off E-Bay a few years ago. After Darth Santa Fe fixed the drive shafts for me it was a sweet runner on DC. Now it is DCC, still sweet. Thank You Simon!

It may not look like I done a lot, but it took a round 10 hours so far. I added wash to darken up sections that of the rock faces where it was to lite. Foam risers up to the mine are all hidden, and added ground foam. All so fitted the supports for the missing bridges. I have yet to decide what I want to do with them as far as weathering.

All so got my Monon Heavy Mike running up to the mine. Few PIC.

With some luck I will post some more PIC this weekend.

Good evening all,

It's been some time since I last darkened the threshold of the forum. I figured even though these have been posted before, I wanted to post them one final time before the layout comes to its demise. Due to a rather large change in my personal life, the layout will be taken down. In my current abode, there is no room for it. I'm trying to figure out how I can take it apart and possibly put it into storage for some day in the future when I might once again have room for a layout.
