Perhaps useful would be a google search for "M62 wrecker".

It was introduced about 1951 and produced until 1957. Not exactly a heavyweight, but square boomed, telescopic and mobile, as requested. Also produced in pretty large numbers.

I think I've got a Minitanks version tucked away somewhere for some sort of MOW project.

Gradeall used a triangular telescoping boom on truck mounted chassis in the early 60s. Grove crane co. took some of that technology and reshaped it and called it trapezoidal telescope boom and put them on off road chassis and later truck chassis. The square or even rectangular shaped telescoping boom has been around since the the second world war but in mostly smaller and usually not even recognizable applications as a crane. The more modern and larger capacity telescopic cranes came into fashion in the 80s. Advances in hydrolic and electronic systems has helped make them more affordable and efficient.

Does anyone know when the "square" boomed telescopic mobile cranes first started to appear please?

Thanks

Cool
