Proto87

Has anyone use the proto87 10 dollar turnouts. Or the all in one track and turnout building kit. They look like it would be a good place to learn how to make turnouts. The web site is www.proto87.com . They would be alot cheaper than the Fasttraks to get started. Well you still might want to get the point filing tool from Fasttracks.

The turnout kits you see on the P87 site for $10 are actualy CVT switch ties and some of thier parts. I started making my turnouts using CVT switch kits and code 70 rail. They take a little time to do but well worth the price. I could not find the Barge cement in my area but used Walthers goo thinned with MEK and the seem to be very durable. I have not laid down track for the layout yet but I did a small yard as a test.

You could spend some money on the point tools but they are realy not nesesary. I did not use the plastic CVT frog but bent the rail to the exact form on the template and soldered and cut gaps. With just rails and ties they work real good.

Thanks for the info. But don't you get all the track and parts to learn how to build a turnout. Compared to CVT setup. Or is it better to just buy the tie strips and use your on track Thanks.

I'Ve used the PROTO:87 stuff, CVT template and tie strips. I used the "ultimate throw bar" with success and fun as well as the frogs.

But I run into a few problems with the CVT frogs. You can see my progress report about Diamond Valley.

CV turnouts are really nice. Proto 87 sells aditional super detailed turnout parts to make them even better.

Here's a clinic that puts a slightly different twist on using the CVT and fast track tools & parts to build a turnout.
