WOW! Strange as that is, I could easily see myself buying that! That thing is cool.

Sure, it's not prototypical, but I could run it just for fun.

I did a little more research, and discovered it's actually a model of Amtrak's new eco-friendly Soylent Express. The locomotive is fueled by PEOPLE!!!

The "cab forward" casting has been around for quite some time. The original one was done by Kemtron and Precision Scale still apparently makes one (PN HO-31144). At least it's in my several year old edition of the PSC catalog. The Yardbird casting appears to be Zamac.

There's a picture at the Yardbird site showing a ladder on the other side of the cab, but it appears the crew would still have to climb in through the window.

http://www.yardbirdtrains.com/YBDetailParts.htm  (page down a bit)

Edit: that picture shows a Mantua Mike with the cab forward casting.

I got's plans for one of those. My road flipped around a Mountain (2-8-4 Cab Forward), put a drive set under the tender (2-8-4 Duplex Cab Forward) and then dropped on a Saddle tank to feed the monster. So far, it's only gone as far as Photoshop.

Why? Long trains, lotsa tunnels, and short turntables

I have the Complete Book of Model Railroading by Dave Sutton and it has step by step how to do that. Not only add the cab forward casting, but since it then looked very unbalanced, they added a small 4-wheel pilot truck, making a 4-4-0 cab forward. Actually, I always wanted to do one, I thought it looked neat.

                                          --Randy

Dan at Yardbird Trains makes those. Here's a picture of a Mantua Cab Forward 2-6-0 from his site.

Actually, that's the Bachmann DD40 drive with dual motors and flywheels, so it might have been worth it to someone who needed one as long as the back of the frame hasn't been hacked off. It looks like it may have been to clear his Talgo arrangement.

 Funny,

I looked at the photos carefully and was considering something.

I was thinking that if this "frankenstein" train went cheap enough, I could see getting the Superliners, the Viewliners, and those Walthers Budds..........disassembling them, and stripping the paint off of the bodies.........giving them the full Alclad II metalizer treatment.........decalling them to the Amtrak Phase IV style......painting the interiors.........and selling them, minus the trucks, on ebay.  (Of course I'd scrap that Lococab/Superliner thing and save it as spare parts)

May sound a little far fetched, but I think in that scenario I could get my investment back plus a small profit.

Of course, I have too much on my plate right now.  If I were retired, I'd actually go for it.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw all those cars as part of it.  Can they not be salvaged and with the cost of passenger cars nowadays maybe save some toonies?  I have no need for those types of cars but I think there may be something there if you look beyond the "set".

MILW-RODR
....

I do realize like I mentioned that my ideas are stuff that could have been, but are some people here possible posting negatives about creating your own trains in general?

I hope my comments are not taken that way.  The person who has done this has shown some ingenuity and hopefully had fun doing it.  And that is what this hobby is all about, right?  Having fun!

I have a kitbashed HO HiRail car, made from a SPUD truck and a narrowed down Chevy Blazer slot car body, painted in CP Action Red, complete with "proper" CP markings, bell and horn.  It was fun to do and is a bit of a conversation piece although it runs poorley due to lack of pickups and weight.

 A RDC on steroids?Question

I had a similar thought. Was the creater possible inspired by a pic of an old Doodlebug and thought maybe Amtrak needed a modern day version? I hope I'm not insulting doodlebugs, I would like to have one in my roster whether it fits my layout theme or not. I've seen a single photo print in an MR layout article (it would have been used in operations) and I love them.

Now for my other thought. I noticed this thread has flooded onto page 4 now and made me think of possible it has gotten a little fuzzy. Are we all still contemplating the indecessency of that particular creation or are we starting to talk about creations in general? I mean that thing is down right ugly and destined for the garbage pile, but I've also flirted with the idea of making my own creations, but realistic ones. 0-8-0T switchers, a rebuilt SD40-2 with an EMD North American cab (think SD60 and 70M's and such). Or a GE 44 tonner converted to narrow gauge, albiet that one was a very brief idea. I think a model of something like a GP50 (I say that because the LHS has one in there budget racks) or a GP40 series rebuilt with an SD70ACe style cab.

I do realize like I mentioned that my ideas are stuff that could have been, but are some people here possible posting negatives about creating your own trains in general?

Well that's odd, but I don't quite think that's odder than the 16-axle diesel I saw once that somebody made out of two DD40s

Was that the DDA90MAC or whatever it was called with two back-to-back UP units?  I used to have a pic of it that a friend of mine sent me, but I haven't been able to find it.

Even in Dutchland around 1930 there was a steam like dooglebug., I think Trix or Roco have made a model of it..

Marc

... it was Trix and a model of the "Kittel" steampowered rail car, built in the 1890´s and doing service in Wurttemberg and Switzerland into the 1930´s. There is one surviving the scrapper in Switzerland at the UeBB (Uerikon-Bauma Bahn).

Here is a pic:

It would make more aesthetic sense to use a hood unit such as an E8 or something, or even something at least in the same colour scheme, but, again, WHY?
