My situation was the exact opposite. My lady friend gave ME a kit for my birthday - a brass kit that built up into a nice little 2-6-4, Japanese design but no known prototype.
Both the locomotive and the relationship are still going strong. Our next anniversary will be our 49th, and the loco is on the head end of a local freight in staging.
