Very cool idea. if the cars are lighted it could be neat to add power to the track so you can turn the lights on.

I like it! Might I recommend adding a clear plexiglass safety fence, however? That beautiful set is too nice to risk losing to stray elbows (or pets) and consequently the floor!

Or an earthquake...at least for us in California.

I love the shelf idea.  That is an awesome conversation piece.

When(ever) I finish getting my layout built, I have a plan for doing something similar. Just outside of my train room is a long wall. My thought is to rig up some sort of combination display shelf and staging yard. There is a fairly long run required to reach it from the layout so I think gaining the bit of elevation needed won't be a huge problem. I was thinking about doing maybe four or six shelves, each shelf containing two or three tracks deep in a stair-step configuration, for the trains to get displayed on. Then there would be two pieces of glass or plexi-glass that could slide back out of the way to get at the trains.

I had to ask.  I had to take a college course recently about risk management and insurance practices.

I know there are some people who see that train on the shelf and just ask a question or two.  Then there are people who will want to see it operate on your layout.

Good questions...to keep it clean I will be using compressed air.  I doubt it will take anything off.  As for burglaries well I have a very sophisticated alarm system but if someone did succeed I guess the train would be one of the last things I would worry about as I have more valueable and sentimental things in my house I am concerned about.  For everything else there's always homeowners insurance!

I love the shelf idea.  That is an awesome conversation piece.  I do have some questions.  How are going to keep dust off of it?  This would be a problem for it.  It would be easy to clean off as you can clean it with a can of compressed air, but you might lose some details off of the loco.

This next question may seem far fetched, but here goes.  What about burglaries?  Please forgive me, but in this day in age, people will break into anything and steal whatever they can get their hands on.  I once had my windshield wiper arms stolen off of my truck and was just sitting in my driveway.

My neighbor had her house broken into and someone stole old 14" TV and a hair straightener from her bathroom.

Just wondering.  But the shelf idea is awesome.

I finished my 844 and all of its excursion cars.  After running it on my layout, I decided I wanted to free up some space.  After all the entire set is over 18 ft long.  So instead of boxing all the cars up, I came up with this:
