Posted by decoy706 on Friday, May 7, 2004 12:35 AM
I have a picture(digital) that I want to get decals made up for a shortline near me. Will I have to get permission to do this from the RR company and if not who do you recomend? I'm looking for around 100 sets to be made

First, I wouldn't bother with asking the railroad. You will spend so much time getting the run-around to finally get to someone who,, -when they hear what you want to do-,, their pupils will turn to dollar signs and they will want to be compensated. Look at what UP has done.

I have dealt with two custom decal manufacturers in the past. Don B. Manlick, which I see is not advertising in MR lately, who did decent work for me 12 years ago.

But the one I go to now for all of my custom decal work is Ron Roberts of Rail Graphics (check the back of MR). I have had dozens of different sets done by Ron. He is a good guy with lots of patience and pays attention to detail.

If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!

IMHO, if you're making the decals for yourself and don't intend to sell and profit from them, then I doubt you would need permission but as a courtesy you could ask the Short Line's management.

Go to www.railgraphicsdecals.com
Telephone number is (847) - 742-5404

NIce site, and looks like they may be able to help you. I can't take credit for this as I simply typed in "Decal Making" on the search box on top of the Forum and found this info.

Suggestion: If you do get the o.k from the shortline manager, offer a model of a completed freight car. Don't get an expensive car, just get a blue box Atheran. I've noticed that some managers in transportation companies like to have a scale model of a company transport vehicle such as a truck, rail vehicle, plane or ship.

Let us know your results.[;)]

Hope this helps!

There is also another option: Some modelers in this forum own an ALPS Printer, which can also print white colors on trim film decial paper. I think if you aks someboday, maybe you know one, he will make a sheet for you.

at www.mgdecals.com, you can also ask for custom decals.
