That's pretty much my thinking, and the main reason I don't bother with a lot of stuff to try and stop them. I had Norton once and thought it was a bigger pain than it was worth, so I chucked it.[:0][:D] Beside, my ISP holds my address book and emails, not my computer, even though I access them.

Most of these target business and those with high email volume as that is they way they self-propogate. The private user has no guarantees that he/she won't be hit, but the probabilities are lower.

Don't buy a MAC and think you will be virus free. MACs have vulnerabilities as well as Linux and other operating systems (OS). If you are a virus writer, why would you write a virus that targets MACs and only affect 5 people in Nebraska? That isn't any fun, now is it? No, they write viruses that will have the most likely chance of reproducing and spreading quickly so they target the big boy on the block and that is currently Microsoft. If MS is ever unseated as the most popular OS, you will see the virus writers shifting to a new target.

I've never had one either, but I've only been on the net 6 years. Been using PC's for close to 20 years.

I think that's strange [%-)] If it's a big sucurity rick to your computer, why not keep seceret about and explain it if the media finds out. I guess it's because not enougth people update their OS with patches. And considering just about all the world uses PC's and windows (Opposed to the 5% using macs)...

I think it's good PR for MS to create the patches, and it is the right thing to do. But WHY ANNOUNCE THE HOLE??? Quietly locate the hole, create and release the patch, and goodbye problem, and no need for hacking idiots to bother.

Personally I hate XP, as I feels that it further removes the average user from the ability to control his own machine.

BTW, thanks Gordon, been there done that, even before the suggestion. No firewalls, no problems, no valuable data either. Simple living in the computer age!!!

Actually, Sasser came out less than 30 days after MS announced the hole. The big deal is that the virus to exploit it came out so fast. XP has a feature that allows it to automatically update itself while you are online. People at home have no really good excuse not to have it on (businesses might want to turn it off if they have some special software or don't reboot their computers very often). MS is coming up with an upgrade for XP which will basically turn in on unless you turn it off (as opposed to the way it is now, where it is off unless you turn it on).

The patch for Sasser like viruses was available 18 days before the virus came out.
I don't see what advantage MS would get from worms and viruses, as it costs them time, effort and money to put out FREE fixes.

The sasser virus is a worm that take advantage of a "Loophole" in the OS's Code. Windoze 2000 and XP are getting hit the most, while it looks like It can affect the windows 9x series as well

I don't think our PC will get hit. It's behind two firewalls. One on our LAN, and ZoneAlarm on the Computer

Nothing gets past my firewall without my permission + the fact that I downloaded & installed the fix also helps.

I didn't get infected at home, but work was another story . KB835732 download from Microsoft will fix any problems and keep you from being infected to begin with.I think this one kinda caught everyone by surprise.

Not me, but if you want to try to keep it out and you have Wndows 2000 or XP, you can go in and enable a Firewall to keep it out, thats what I did, and it still lets me go to Trains.com, so it all good!
