I recently read a fascinating article about how you can create your own parts from existing materials. Since I read it I have been obsessed with anything I throw in the trash that can be used to enhance a scene. Whether its the top of an asprin bottle, to straws, pens and even leftover plastic from modeling kits, there are numerous ways to spruce up a building. As an example, I recently made some drapes from some leftover cloth laying around. But I also suggest that you look around real railroad tracks to get inspired. As an example, on the CN north line, I once came across a toilet bowl laying next to the railroad tracks. Clearly it was not operational, and I am not sure how it got there or why it was put there. But the moral of the story it was placed there by someone and makes the setting more real.
Here's some sources for ideas and parts.http://www.thenarch.com/making_a_scene_detail_parts.htm

I have in several little boxes things like bike racks, bikes, motorcycles, TV antennae(yes, you can build them---just don't ask me----), garbage cans---we also have hand tools, machine tools and that kinda stuff---, A garage I'm finishing off will have a couple of milling machines and hand tools. It can get very teeeeeeeennsiee!!!
