How do lateral motion devices on steam locomotives work? Are there different types? Where can one find pictures/drawings of them?
Thanks,
John

John,
Lateral motion devices work somewhat like shock absorbers, and are mounted between the driving boxes on each driver (one in front and one behind the axle). The Kalmbach,"Locomotive Cyclopedia
1941" Page 697 and 699 show Franklin, and Alco lateral motion devices.
