Final Call, Rivarossi Crescent Limited Bound For Scrap Burn Pile!
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 12:15 AM
Hello everyone,

Since I got only a small number of responses to my query about my Crescent
Limited HO Scale 4-6-2, and limited support, and replacement parts, *sigh* I
am putting the loco up for liquidation for parts or find a better home, lest it be
found in a train wrecking yard. After getting a disheartening email from
Walthers that parts are not available, and no reply from Woodie's Train Shop,
I have no choice but to part with the loco, and or sell for scrap parts...

It was a gift that was used from my ex in El Paso. Purchased at 95.00 in 1989,
I'm asking 55.00 or best offer for parts. I hate to see it go, but if it can serve a
greater purpose than collecting dust, then so be it. Which engine would you
think is better alternative? Mantua, Bowser, or Bachmann? Let me know. I
like to find an H.O. Scale steam loco that is powerful, and affordable. Please
help. Thank You for your time.

Shalom,
Micha'el

What specificly is wrong with the loco? If it is not to unmanagable, I might be able to use alternate parts to fix the loco for you. If not, I will buy it out right possibly.

According to my Rivarossi 1998 catalog that model has a five-pole motor with flywheel, wormgear trans and metal chassis, if they are one & the same.
Think they were sold for $100.00 by modelexpo. www.golfmanorhobbies.com is the current
authorizied riv repair center.
I owned the Riv FEF, Challenger and Mallet, all problematic.

Your $55.00 is way out of line IMO.

If you are sill interested in a steamer review the merits of the New Bachmann Spectrum HW and the
New Riv FEF-3. Both were reviewed by MR and since I do own both, I'm Q U A L I F I E D.

Dear Micha'el

Realizing what has happened is not an easy thing, As I still have a faint glimmer of hope for my bigboy, (Yes some would say I suffer from "Don't Give Up the Ship" syndrome) I know how you feel. If iwere you let it sit on the shelf for now, something or someone may have an answer for you at a later date. Bowser and NWSL do sell parts and motors for different loco's you may want to call them.

As far as a replacement for your "Ex" and something with equivalent (IMHO) detailing you may want to consider IHC/Mehano steam engines, which contrary to some beliefs is a good product, especially for the money. But don't spend anything more than $90 US for this product as for a few extra $$$ you can get into the higher end stuff.

If your willing to part with $150 or so you may consider Athearn Genisis, Bachmann Spectrum or the new Rivarossi FEF-3.

Though I have no experience with Mantua, Those who have them Love them

Hope this helps

Why don't you check out EBAy for another chassis to mount under it?
Parts is parts no matter where you get em. I picked up an IHC Premier 4-6-2 for $34.00 NEW in box on ebay from modeltrainstuff.com he always sells new IHC steam locos CHEAP...They run great too for a budget steam loco.

I had a 4-6-2, paid $140.00 for it three years back. It isn't a high tech loco. The
only upgrade that I'm aware of is it is now DCC ready and sells for $75.00 from
trainworld.

The Athearn Mikado & Light Pacific have a traction imbalance problem but
those too are inexpensive from Trainworld.

I'll bet $25 sight unseen that Golf Manor Hobbies in Cincinnati can A) fix it and/or B) has the parts available to fix it. They have a web site, CALL them.
What could have happened.... did.
