The other recipe is good, but all I did was use less that a pint of hot tap water, some food coloring and the glycerin. I put it all in a small plastic container and let them set for about a month. After that I took the lichen out of the container, let it dry(in a cool dry place) and used it as was needed. I still have some of my original batch of litch left and its stayed pretty pliant and not dry or brittle. Experiment a little. It never hurts. you might come up with your own idea to keep real litch preserved.

try this. 3 gallons water 1gallon commercial-grade glycerin. dissolve 1.5 packets of green dye like rit or tintex in the preserving solution for variety pick up several shades of greens and yellows heat the glycerin, water, and dye solution almost to its boiling point. the ideal temp. is 250f. stuff as much as you can into the solution continue heating to return the brewto a simmer do this for 5 min. remove the pot from the stove and let it cool when it is cool enough to stick your hand in remove the lichen use heavy rubber gloves, grab a handfull and squeeze out all the liquid you can.reheat the brew for the second batch replenishing it as follows 4gal.batch 1.5 pints fresh glycerin 1packet dye use the next darker shade of dye spred on news paper and let dry for a day or two GOOD LUCK.

Modelling with Real Lichen

I was out camping this weekend and was able to gather up about 3 cubic feet of soft lichen (the stuff sold in hobby stores that is coloured green, red and rust).

I have been told that the way to keep it from drying out is to add die and glycerin. Does anyone have the recipe for this?

Thanks in advance
