I have 3 of the newer DCC Onboard 0-6-0s. They all run well, the valve gear doesn't stick and slow speed operation with the Lenz decoder they come with is really good. I mean they will just creep.

I'm using them as the base model for kitbashing 3 IC 0-6-0s including a tank engine shop switcher.  I took the smoke units out and filled that space with lead on the two with tenders and also filled the domes for a little extra weight.

I'm going to use that space for the speaker on the engine that will be the shop switcher. A couple under construction photos of IC 254. The boiler is just sitting on the frame so it looks a little canted.

In my experience the new production ones are good little engines.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.

Much of the time you can search You Tube for reviews. Videos can be iffy but you can get a general idea.

Below is one I found. There are a few others.

If you have mechanical and electrical skills, it is doable.

Here's the diagram for 1990's style.

Not a very good pancake motor design. They have completely redesigned their 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 with Spectrum style can motor drive. Don't know if they've redone the 2-6-2 also.

PS-Just saw the new 4-4-0 and it's absolutely GORGEOUS!!!

Still getting Permission denied so below is the diagram from the Bachmann website.

One fellow in the Bachmann HO forums has a small fleet of the 0-6-0 and says they run quite well after fine tuning.

I had a couple 0-6-0 with pancake motor I gave away some years ago.

A DZ125 can be squeezed in the loco. A few people have put metal wheels on the tender with wipers and sound decoder in the tender with speaker.

Some just by the 2-6-0, DCC ready or with sound.

I had this problem and solved it by gluing small flat washers to the tops of the pilot and following trucks. The washer are out of sight and the wheels stay on the track.

rockymidlandrr-So your saying the newer ones actually have a can motor/split frame design and not a split frame pancake motor like the old ones did?

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying partly.  The newer ones do not have a pancake motor, the have a small can motor, and yes, it does still have a split frame design.

I have 4 of them, from the 0-6-0 with no valve gear to the 2-6-0 and the 2-6-2 with all the valve gear factor installed.  They all use the same mechanism.  There is a split frame design much like a N scale model and the frame surrounds the can motor inside.  The motor does indeed get its power through the frame.  I have never had a problem with any of mine and the run decently after you install power pickups on the tender as well.

Installing DCC is enitrely feasible, I have one already converted and another one in the works, it just takes time and doubly make sure that the motor is isolated from the frame.  Just be really careful with the disassembly because there are screws in the worst of places to get to.  When you take the shell off watch out for the smoke unit or you will break it.

Converting to On30?  That part I do not know, I would think that the sixe of the engine would be drastically out of scale but the wheels would not.  Just my thoughts.

Hope this helps.

Yea I have one. Not real proud of it though. "C" rating in my book. Appearance, lettering, pulling power. Front trucks constantly derailed no matter how many times I tweaked them. Took them off as well as the back ones, turned it into an 0-6-0 and it at least stays on the tracks!

I bought an 0-6-0 a couple of years ago, and found the motor was surrounded by a weight, much like an N scale locomotive. There was no room for a decoder in the locomotive, but it could go in the tender. The big issue I saw was if the motor could be isolated from that weight or not. I believe the weight conducts the power from one set of wheels to the motor

The newer ones may run pretty well, since Bachmann's been upgrading their products a lot for the past few years (engines once in the Spectrum line are now in the Standard line). I think the 0-6-0/2-6-0/2-6-2 uses the same can motor as the Spectrum 2-8-0, which is an excellent runner, and my Standard line diesels are very smooth runners.

The Bachmann 2-6-2 is part of their "train set grade" product line, it's actually their 0-6-0 with front and rear wheels added IIRC. It may be able to run OK with some work, maybe a new motor, but not like say a Spectrum engine.

Anybody have one of these?  Do they run decent?  How easy is it to install DCC?  I was hoping to convert on to On30...

Cheers,

-Chris
