Hi!! Vincent. If I wanted to do what you want to do I would simply remove the worm drive and the connecting universal joints and shaft's. Thus, allowing the sound to work and have the engine running as a dummy unit( ofcourse the motor will still rotate, but seeing as there is no drive chain present it would greatly reduce any motor wear. This is just how I would do it, you don't have to listen to me !! Because I'm not sure about the type of loco you have.

I HAVE A "EMDGP38-2" MTH,CAN A PERSON HAVE THE ELECTRICAL MOTOR'S DISCONNECTED,BUT STILL HAVE THE SOUND WORK,LIKE THE HORN AND BELL,TO RUN AS DUMMY SECOND UNIT,WITH MY LIONEL COMMAND CONTROL,I HAVE TALKED TO QSI & THEY SAME COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE UPGRAGE WILL BE READY MAYBE 3.
