I print them out on glossy inkjet photo paper. It even lets the right amount of light through to look good.
I pulled a stunt with 765 when it was being first restored, a numberboard was on the ground ready to be hoisted in place, I took 8mm of it, then later used the film, cut out the image and put it on my lit up NKP 765 numberboards, way cool!
label printers ounds like a neet trick, I like to get them to light up, if they have white on black printing.
jfallon For those of you who model in HO scale, if you custom paint a locomotive, or re-number a factory painted one, you know the frustration of the numberboards. It is not easy to line up a tiny row of the correct numbers, especially four times. If you are using black numbers on a white background, find or borrow a labeling machine such as the Brother P-touch. The small size numbers just fit into HO scale numberboards, they are printed onto an adhesive label, and you can print all four at one time.

Thanks for that tip!
Any other "tips" on cutting and mounting?
