Here is a link to a page with all the ascii and symbol characters you will ever need to manually write them in HTML. Remember to copy the code into the HTML editing window and not the regular text editor window.

http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm

Thanks for the link.

A variation of Burlington Northern Rails' answer is to use the ALT key. On a PC you should be able to hold down the ALT key and type 0228 for ä. You can use the numbers mentioned by BNR and add a zero in front of them as you hold down the ALT key.

For additional special characters you can open up the Character Map program that comes on most PCs. On mine it is located under Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools. In the program you can select the desired font and then look for the character you want. When you click on the character you can copy and paste or for many of them you can look down at the lower right corner and see the keystroke combination that will produce the character.

Umlauts are the litte dots above the "a" in Märklin.  I did a cut-and-paste to get "Märklin" inserted, but if I were "scratchbuilding" the word, how would I do this?

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
