FYI, i was not advertising.  Merely linking a spec sheet.  Sorry if it came across otherwise.

Does this mean I'll stop using the old Olympus? Not on your life! I'll keep using it until it either shrivels up and dies or I can no longer get cards for it. There are a couple of cards on the way but there's no gaurantee they'll work. At present I have one operational SM card (64MB) and I get error messages on it periodically.

Then why buy a new camera if you're still investing in cards and still planning to use the old one?  That's 80 bucks plus whatever the new cards cost you that you could have used for something else.

Because there's no guarantee the cards (only 1 of which was purchased) are any good and they are difficult to find. Next time I may not be able to find a good one.

Where did you order from? A couple of those super low price online camera stores have REALLY bad reputations.

@Jeff:

Mind if I ask where you got your camera from?  I did some research on the Nikon Cool-Pix L18 and it looks like a decent camera.  if I had known, I would have struck up a conversation about the Canon A650IS that I am trying to sell.  GREAT camera, but I get the XT when the wife gets her 40D ;)

I ordered it from OfficeMax. Last time I checked they are very reputable.

Amen to that.  My wife and I are shopping for a replacement for her Canon Rebel XT (DSLR) and have been eyeballing the 40D and 50D.  I cannot count the number of stores we have run into that are nearly 100% scams.  The body only for the 50D is about $1100, but we can find it as low as $600.....

We have found that if you take the website name and ad the word 'review' to a google search, you find all sorts of interesting information.  Examples: "fotoconnection.com review" and "onewayphoto.com review".

Also watch out for major discounts due to lack of a USA warranty.

In the digital camera niche of the market, if the price is so low its amazing, then its probably a scam.

Well I went camera shopping yesterday. I looked at the ones at Walgreens but none were set up for demonstration so I went over to Wal-Mart. Try as I might I couldn't find the Kodak EasyShare 713. The Kodak EasyShare 813 was on display however so I tried it. The results were less than spectacular. It worked OK from a distance but had a lot of trouble with close-up shots, even with no zoom. By close-up I mean within a foot. I tried several others, some just didn't seem to balance well in my hands (no feeling there) and weren't easily held onto. Then I came across a Nikon CoolPix L18. I seem to remember somebody telling me they had great success with one of these. I tried it and found it extremely easy to use, easy to hold onto and balance and was essentially point and shoot. I tried several shots with it and was quite pleased. One shot was of the store shelf and was within six inches at full zoom. It was crisp and clear. The focus was so sharp I thought I might get cut. I checked the price. Not bad, just under $100. I looked for one on the shelf and wouldn't you know it, out of stock. Well all is not lost. Upon returning home I did an internet search for it. I found a lot of places that advertised it but most had a message that I really dislike. Out of stock / discontinued. After searching more sites than I care to count I finally located one and for $20 less and with free shipping. I checked the availability to be sure. Yep, it was there. I immediatly ordered it and it should be here within a couple of weeks. Does this mean I'll stop using the old Olympus? Not on your life! I'll keep using it until it either shrivels up and dies or I can no longer get cards for it. There are a couple of cards on the way but there's no gaurantee they'll work. My Canon A540 came with a 16mb card, and I bought 2 256mb cards for I think $10 each.  I've has well over 100 images on a card befor downloading to the 'puter - I've never used the second card!!  the 540 is 6mp, and every time i look at the mid priced cameras the price goes down and the mp go up!!  Check out the quality places like Wmart or Kmart.Smile

Jeffrey,

If you're gonna plunk down $50 for an SM card, I'd go Loathar's route.  Not only will you be buying into better technology and better quality pictures, you also won't have to deal with an obsolete medium.  Chances are that a card will probably come with the camera anyhow.

My My 2 cents...

Tom

No card. My C513 came with (I think) 128meg internal memory. I could take about 25 hi res pictures with the onboard memory. Big Lots had 1gig SD cards for $10 and 512 meg for $7.50.
I'm really happy with mine for the price and it's only the 5 mp.

They do, but the cards that came with the camera are woefully small to be of any use other than to take a few trial shots to get to know the camera. Like my Canon A570. The 256MB card that came with it was good for THREE pictures in the best quality, ONE if I use RAW format. I bought a 4GB one and stuck the 256MB in my phone to store ebooks - it holds dozens of books.

An adapter was something that I looked at some time ago. Unfortunately all the ones I've seen won't work in my camera. The reason is that they are longer than the actual SM card would be and won't allow the loading door to be closed. The door must be closed and locked or the camera won't even turn on.

xD to Smartmedia Adapter Memory Card Slot Converter Reader Writer

There is a picture of one that will accept a xD card as the real memory into a SM "shell".   I did a search for "smartmedia adapter" on Google Shopping and came up with various people selling the adapters.  Starting about $13, most looked to be about $20 for the adapter.  xD memory is pretty popular right now also.

Check on getting an SM adapter.

I do not have anything that uses SM, but I am sure they exist.  You can probably find one that will accept SD or mini-SD cards.  That way, you will be able to take advantage of the cheap (and fast) SD cards that are available right now.  Heck, you could have 3 or more SD cards for the price of the SM card you found.

By the way, I have bought online from that camera shop.  They were highly recommended to me, and I did not have any problems in my transactions.

I'm seeing that. They say they have a 128 MB SM card available. I'm ordering it but it's almost $50. Ouch! Still that's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new camera.

Not when you can get a decent Kodak 7mp with zoom, macro and video for $80 on sale at almost any drug store. This one was $79 last week. Takes SD cards which are $10 for 1 gig.

Hey Jeff,

I second the Adorama recommendation, I buy from their Amazon.com online store many times and have had great service and prices every time.

Wish I could help you, but I have none of the cards you seek.

Jeffrey, my company purchases a lot of stuff from Adorama and have found them to be a reputable and trustworthy business.  I believe that they are quite a big dealer.

I'm looking at a company called Adorama Camera. Their site says they have a 128 MB SM card. I'm trying to find confirmation of that. I've been finding a bunch of old sites that no longer have them.

Jeffrey,

I have purchased similar cards on e bay. They were new old stock. Give this a try. Sometimes a high end camera shop will have them but I would try e bay first.

Anybody have a SM card they can part with? Not many cameras around anymore that use these. They are not available in any store.
